Fellows that modify the 226 engine to gain more hp. What changes are made?

If  bore and stroke  were revised what would the new bore and stroke be.

Using regular off the shelf parts a WC/WD engiine with 4" bore & 4" stroke is 201 cid. By increasing the bore to 4.125" you are now at 217 cid. Adding the 4.5" stroke WD45 crank to the larger bore now puts you right at 240 cid. Of course the stock WD45 or D17 is the 4" bore & 4.5" stroke combo at 226 cid. For a fairly mildly modified pulling engine I prefer the "Power Crater" pistons for a 170 or 175 that puts you around 7.75:1 compression with the 4.5" crank, but others wanting even more compression like to use WD flat top pistons with the 4.5" crank. Any of these combinations use the same rods, as everything from WC-D17 is the same length. Anything bigger than these combinations require custom sleeves and custom stroked cranks. Good Luck...Kip

Ask dr.allis how many cubic inches his is ask.brown how many cubic inches his is. Ask barney how many inches he ran in the antique class. Ask jr crum .Hayden Gibson. Mitch Pankey. Just ask them how many cubic inches they feel it takes to be competitive and go from there. Its only a matter of opinion.

from what i've read, as with most engine builds, you are only limited by your check book and class rules
There are 3 ways to do job GOOD, FAST, CHEAP. YOU MAY CHOOSE 2. If its FAST & CHEAP it won't be GOOD, if it's GOOD & CHEAP it won't be FAST, and if its GOOD & FAST it won't be CHEAP!!!!

The claim of 4 7/8" bore is impossible, in fact I don't think anyone has done 4 3/4" let alone 4 7/8".

Our biggest is 4 1/2 bore and 6 1/8 stroke. Used an engine out of an E combine. We had a guy in our old club that went bigger bore. I don't remember what but he said he split two blocks so now he has some sort of tie rods going from side to side. His name is Ira Banter he is brother of the Banter brothers team that pulled multiple engines on there modified early on when not allot of people did that.

Use of a deck plate might gain a little, but most Antique Clubs don't allow any deck plate spacers between block and cyl head.

Ps don karpells old pulling engine was the first 4 3/4 bore engine i knew of and we all know how many years it was on the pulling circuit. Yes everyone that we do engines for is in hope that their coompetitors ignore me.

Rod you will be suprised what you learn when you start betting people that they arent 440 inches.i bet that there was no way dons wc running a step down box was 440 inches well when tbe head came off my money left it measured a stroke of 6.25 and 440 inches so you do the math on the bore size if you can. Four people where standing there when the bore was actuallyy measured as well.

4 3/4 is doable anything over that  the sleeves are very thin. anything can put in. 4 7/8 plus a good size wall thickness is no room. Some guys dream big bore but if it does run its a dream . dons engine is 440 + .

Yes, please post pictures. Also put a caliper or whatever measuring stick you use in the south to measure the bore diameter in place while taking the picture.
