I have my brake shoes out, and will clean them up, replace lining, and whatever else is needed, my first question is, should I replace my brake springs with new ones now since they're out?
They don't appear to be rusted out or damaged, but I am going to sand blast them and look them over good before I do anything with them. no damage to either drum, but they were down to the rivets. ![]() Also, I see where a guy can buy brake lining on E-bay for $30.00 for a set of 4, and I'm wondering if this is a good place to buy?, or should I get them from somewhere else? The minor stuff has been removed from the back of the tractor, but I AM gonna make me some "tractor stands" to hook to the frame on both sides to make this repair safe! ![]() Also, my second question is, since I'm taking the ring AND pinoin from another transmission, plus the shifting gears and possably reverse too, I was wondering if I need to use ALL the shimms from the old transmission on Mine?, or should I blue the ring and pinion and do a "rematch" of thegears regardless of what I have now? ![]() THANKS in advance!

I would start with everything as it came out of the doner then use your blue and see how it looks. Since the gearset is used if they end up adjusted differently ( most likly tighter) you could have a noisy rearend.

Why not just swap the whole assembly?

Most problems can be solved with the proper application of high explosives.

Dr Allis, the old transmission has slop in the top (Shifting) gears and when in reverse, it's now skipping teeth.
Also, 3rd gear shift collar's splines are stripped off and it can't stay in 3rd gear.
So I bought this rearend a couple of years ago, and am now at the point of repairing/replacing whatever is needed as I get into this WD's transmission and see what all is wrong. |

Unless there's something wrong with the brg assembly on the pinion shaft, you should reuse your ring and pinion and change no shims. Transfer all the gears from the top and maybe bottom shafts only.

That's my concern, damage HAS been done to the ring gear on my tractor now.
Havent been able to get a GOOD look at the pinion but I'd say it's a safe bet it's got issues too!
when I get it opened up this week, I'll take pictures and get you guys opinion!
The ring gear has sharp edges from miss matching the pinion, I'm pretty sure the bearing that's on the pinion shaft is bad, but to what exstent?,I'm not sure.
I have two of those bearings here, but I MAY opt for what has been mentioned, put the whole unit on, remove the old WD45 serial number, and stamp in my #144707.

when I was draining the oil out of the transmission, I hear this "clunk" in the bucket, poured out the oil, and found this in the bottom,,,,
I'm guessin' it's come out of the shift tower? ![]() Edited by Larrywdin - 03 May 2012 at 1:38am |

It's coming along! Someone will know what that metal piece you found is from. Do you know what that bracket attached to the left final drive is for?

Neat. I figured it had to be either for a sickle mower or a picker. It would be really cool if you could hunt the old picker down and get ahold of it.

I found that same hunk of metal in my tranny.. it came off the reverse lever, kept you from shifting into reverse when you were going for 3rd or 4th gear.

Flint, that's what I THOUGHT that was,,but wasn't sure.
I'll take the shift tower in and go through it to then, probably TIG it back together.
