Whats the story on the single shank subsoiler for the WD and WD45s? I read its to break up hard pan, and get air into the soil, and good for runoff. But how were they used? Did you subsoil every fall? Every spring? Certain crops? How far apart do you space the passes? Go one way or both ways?

Sorry for all the questions, but I can't find any info on how they were actually used. I see them at plow days, and for sale from time to time, but that's about it.

Kind of a neat tool!   It really has no value where the ground freezes out.   mother nature fractures the ground, way better.   Now the southern boys can add there thoughts about them down where the ground don't freeze!

If you have red clay its does a job of breaking it up as nothing else will except something like chisel plowing great for permanent pastures. The subsoiler opens up a gash in the ground for air and water to penetrate the soil and the hard pan. Also they work good for going around the outside of fields that have trees around them to cut the feeder roots that go out in the field.I also use one in my garden to rip out big rocks.

Dad purchased a s/c soil soiler in 1955 ($75.00) along with the snap coupler conversion kit and lift latches for his 1953 WD with curved gear shift.
He used the sub soiler to loosen the ground up so he could plow. Did a pass every 6 feet. We also used the subsoiler for pulling out hidden stones and tree roots.
In the winter we removed the tooth and installed a steel top with sides for a box on the sub soiler made from grandpas's steel roller. We placed a large stone in the box for a counter weight . This tractor had a Horn loader plus tractor chains which were needed to move around in the snow.A snow bucket was also made from the roller.
This WD would go through very deep snow without getting stuck with this set up and if you got stuck I would shovel the wheels free and the tractor would spin its way out and take off. I was 11 at the time.

We just picked one up at auction. In the thought to rip some plow pan and help drain some ground. We will see

We subsoil every fall now days 14-20 inches. We have red and black clay and have to break it up for water penetration. The single shank subsoiler was before my time but we still have one, I will ask my dad what they did back then.

Dad used to subsoil every three years in row crop ground but I don't remember him working hay ground with it.
I had a plow day/ subsoiler day last year, the ground is bottom ground that the guys subsoiled drained off faster and the ground made more corn that the unsubsoiled did. I going to work all my ground two or three years from now on. Now that's here and like all ground it's diff you might have.
3 WD45's with power steering,G,D15 fork lift,D19, W-Speed Patrol, "A" Gleaner with a 330 corn head,"66" combine,roto-baler, and lots of Snap Coupler implements to make them work for their keep.
