Never heard of the shaft breaking, the stands and the arms yes, but not the shaft.
Is it getting oil to it? Are plugs in the end of shaft good?

Perhaps you should lay a straight edge across the head where the stands attach and check the stands themselves to assure they are all the same height?

Twice would mean somethings wrong. Are the stands all the same height? Are they evenly torqued? Getting oil?

Stuck valve? Hard to beak a shaft. Should be easy to check oil when running at idle, only drips flying around without valve cover.

Wanted to point out why I mentioned a sticking valve. Few years ago i bought a barely running wd-45. After replacing the manifold due to several issues and ignition change, cold checking valve gaps, I still had a miss when hot. I popped the valve cover when hot to recheck and my readings were moving. (Shaft had extreme wear and needed replaced when I opened the first time because the oil line was not placed in shaft hole from the PO rebuild). Anyway, I was surprised of the readings were changing reducing valve clearance so I started putting some MM oil in the gas efforts to add lubricant to the valve guides. That was 3 years ago and tractor runs great, and gets used hard.

If it is breaking the outer end off, I would say you have a valve hitting piston or a spring that is bottoming out.                  MACK

It will take one strong @$$ push rod that will not  bend to break off a rocker shaft !!!
