I have an wd that needed a new pto shaft. I got the new shaft but can not remove old carrier with bearing to install on new shaft. Any suggestions or hints would be greatly appreciated. Bearing with carrier spins freely on the old shaft, but does not slide off like it looks like it should.

Presses onto shaft, start with soaking w/ penetrating oil, the drive it off.

Bob,
If I remember right...You will remove the seals from the carrier ( replace the seals ) and then you will be able to remove the snap rings and press off. If you are replacing the shaft, I would remove the snap rings from the carrier and pull the shaft and bearing out and clean up the carrier and install new shaft & bearing...make sure you install the inboard seal on the shaft before the bearing.

Hi Dennis,
  I really am new at all this.The seals your talking about are the metal covers on each side ? mine says national on it . But they dont just come off for me,Do i have to basically destroy them to get them off ? And i assume the snap rings will be found under the metal seals on each side ? I will try and get a pic or 2 on here as soon as i can.

After having been through the AGCOpartsbooks.com for the last few days, I noticed that there were some later variations on  quite a few things especially when it came to me finding the info for my mower.  When I was looking at this, it also involved the PTO.  I am going to "wrongly" assume that if your WD is older that maybe there is a variation of things.  I went throught the guest book with the #3 mower for WD and that is where I found the variations.  I could not get in the operational manual due to I do not have a logon from a local dealer so I went the cheap route.  I know that this helped me to figure out the exact type of mower I have but it took me a bit of time as I went through all the parts pages as it involves many aspects of the mower.  I hope that you know more about how to look these things up but I thought that might give you some insight as that is how I started and then finally got to this website.

I believe the "metal covers" you are talking about are the shields for the bearing. There is no reason to remove them. If you are talking about the tin shield on the face of the bearing(that says National) and you remove it, you will need new bearings cause you can't put a shield back in once it's out.

There may be snap rings holding the bearing in the carrier but you want the shaft out of the bearing. It might be that you have to remove the bearing from the carrier in order to press the shaft out of the bearing. Clear as mud hu?

Bob,

The seals I mentioned are on each side of the bearing, they are pressed in the carrier housing.

If you do not have this unit apart yet...You will have to pry out the metal encased seals from both sides of the carrier assembly, they will not be salvaged. Next step will be to remove both Snap Rings from the Carrier Housing ( hopefully the cavity is not full of rust,etc.) Next you will remove the Shaft & Bearing together from the Carrier. After that is accomplished you will want to clean up the bearing cavity of the carrier.

I understand that you are replacing the shaft assembly...so next step is to slide the new seal on the shaft first and then place a snap ring on, next press a new bearing on the shaft in the proper area...once you have the new bearing pressed on the shaft you can then place the shaft & bearing in the carrier it should be snug but not a press fit as it has a "floating area" between the snap rings, so the bearing can find a non thrust area after it connected to the PTO drive shaft.

After you have the bearing in place and the snap rings installed in the carrier...you next press the new seals into the carrier  housing flush.

Now after you have successfully accomplished this and then go to install it on the tractor, you may experience difficulty getting the new PTO shaft to connect to the drive shaft, burrs, worn shear pin hole,etc.

But we will deal with that if and when it happens.

Hi Dennis,
  Thanks for the info,we were able to get the shaft off the carrier bearing,but we did have to destroy the seal on the one side to get to the snap ring. I am going down on monday to a tractor place  near me that looks like they have a replacement seal. The cavity in the carrier looked pretty good along with the bearing. If they have a new bearing i will grab one of those too. This all started with a shear pin that destroyed the end of the shaft, so i want to make sure i get the right pins also. I understand a grade 2 nut and bolt can also  be used ,since its soft enough to break  before causing damage. This isnt my tractor, its for a friend whos husband passed away last fall. But with this forum and your help i am learning a lot and am very grateful for people that take their time to help us newbies.

FYI...The shearpin coupling on the shaft is replaceable also.
Also you mention a NEW SHAFT...I was not aware there were new shafts available...if so how much Dollar$ are they.

Hi Dennis, 
  Had to order the seals, should be in today.As for the new shaft,her son found it online for 190 dollars plus shipping.That was before we found out that we could of just bought a new coupler end on this forum.( hindsight is always 20/20 ) and had it welded on.
