    Posted: 22 Dec 2021 at 3:14pm
I recently bought a 1951 WD, non running condition.    I got it running and cleaned out the gas tank and when I put it back on the tractor I noticed that the hydraulic control lever won’t go all the way up, the linkage hits the fuel tank stopping the arm about 1” from full up position. I wandered if the adjustment was wrong, but seems to be pretty close. I looked at my 48 WD and it had an indentation made into the tank for the linkage to clear the tank.
So did they change the linkage in 51 or do I have the wrong fuel tank? Maybe a WC or something.   Or do you think my hydraulic adjustment be way off?
Are all WD tanks supposed to have that indentation made into the tank?
Or any suggestions as to what may be my problem would be great.
Thanks

I thought all WD's and WD45's had that pocket stamped into the tank just for that reason. WC tank would have the sediment bowl on the right side instead of the left side and would not have that pocket.

A few tanks I removed from WDs did not have the pocket. They worked and there was room enough for the hydraulic linkage to move.  Since I have a selection of tanks I use the one with a pocket. No idea why all did not have a pocket. There was a change in the hydraulic rod in later WDs.

Thanks for the replies, my tank doesn’t have the pocket and is flat on the bottom. The linkage arm hits the tank even without the long rod attached.   I guess someone swapped it out at some point. I guess I’ll have to just get another tank with the pocket. Don’t really want to try to re-work the linkage.   Anyone have a WD tank with the pocket for sale?

I actually wandered about that. Probably needs to be 3/4” to 1” deep. May try it if another tank doesn’t turn up. It seems solid and would stand pounding a pocket into it, but you never know.
Probably will try to dent it In some and see if the tank will stand it. Looks solid. I’ll let y’all know if I go that route.   I had just never seen this before, I thought all the tanks were the same.

Certainly a wierd situation...

If you want the 'bump' to look proper, take a chunk of soft plastic (polyethylene or similar) and using a sander, shape it to the bump shape you need, then position and address it gently with your hammer.  If you're not getting the bump you want, move to a slightly heavier hammer.  If you're not concerned about the paint, and you're CERTAIN the tank is empty, you can gently warm the area, place a leather glove on it, and put your plastic piece to it, but stay gentle... and don't make up your mind on it 'till it's cool enough to lick.
Ten Amendments, Ten Commandments, and one Golden Rule solve most every problem. Citrus hand-cleaner with Pumice does the rest.

plastic or wood block is OK... rounded wood dowel would let you work "areas" as you go... Just dont use steel with sharp edges. ........... and set it on foam block or pillow... When upside down and smacking the BOTTOM, you dont want the TOP to be setting on a hard table and deform.

Thanks for that tip, I didn’t even think about laying it on something soft to keep the top from getting a dent.

I've got a tank here in Wisconsin, but there HAS to be one closer to you than this one.  Unless somebody just happens to be going through?
