I bought a house a couple of years ago. It came with a WD sitting in the barn with a blown rod. I haven't had the time to deal with it. I just found a Craigslist posting in my area for a complete WD45 Engine for $350. I've done a bit of reading and it looks like the WD45 Engine will direct fit into my WD. Is that correct? Also, while I have your attention, does it sound like a fair price? Anything I need to be weary of? Thanks for your help and expertise.

Cody - yes, it will bolt right in.  The air cleaner hose is bigger on a 45, so if you're running the 45 carb, you'll have to rig it up or change-out with a 45 air cleaner.  As for things of which to be weary, it'll be difficult to assess unless you can see & hear it run.  Most any of the issues - blow by, low oil pressure, etc. require running to test.  You could do a compression test to get some idea of it's condition.  Inspect the manifold for cracks and burnout too.  Overall, they're good reliable engines. $350 for a good, complete running engine seems like a fair/good deal to me.

There is a BIG difference between running and non-running !   If I was in your situation I would consider paying $350 for a non-running engine if it came with all acc. (gen, carb, dist, and as said above air cleaner if you plan on useing the WD45 carb. Keep us posted.

I hear the WD has a magneto and the WD45 has a distributor.
Can these be swapped from one engine to the other?

My dad bought a new '53 WD. It came with a battery ignition.

According to my notes; Battery ignition for the model WD started at serial no. 136318. Yes the distributor/mag can be switched between the models. Personally, not a big magneto fan. I'm sure they work fine if everything is 'right'. Distributor seems to be more forgiving.
