here's what is happening,, when I ground the panel box (its supposed to be grounded, right?) I get arcing and the resistor on the light/charging switch glows red hot. Amp gage will show discharge when light is turned on, but will not show a charge,, cutout relay is not making contact when engine is running,, I can close the contacts (Yea,,, I know that is a no-no) and amp gage will show charge. still POS ground.  charging system was working, then after setting for a few months, did not work. Autolite genny if that makes any difference

Is the genny running the wrong polarity? I'll try polarizing...
maybe a bad amp gage or light switch? short, grounded?
broken or shorted, grounded, wire somewhere?
bad cutout relay?

I will keep searching,, but other input is welcome, might tell me something I have not looked for...

I would like to keep/fix the 6V system,, so don't suggest 12V alternator but, that may happen if this cannot be fixed

Was the wiring changed? This smells like a wire with 6 volts got shorted to the F terminal or the wire attached to the generator F terminal. There could be an internal generator short, I suppose. Disconnect the F terminal at the generator and see what happens. Did the two wires at the generator somehow get switched?

Ok...its working now...I put a D-R genny on off a parts tractor.just cleaned it up, shined up the commutator, charging about 5-6 amps, 10+ amps with the lights on or hi charge position.wiring is original, allthough lotsa black tape on it
I'm thinkin there was a short or ground out in the other genny...
