 Topic: WD 45 Weight for Pulling

I've got a 1954 WD 45 I'm taking to a local tractor pull next weekend. I'll have it on the scale then, but in the meantime I'm trying to ballpark the weight to figure out what weight class I'll be running in. The tractor is pretty much bone stock and equipped as delivered with 3 bolt wide front, belt pulley, drawbar and snap coupler hitch. 14.9x28 rears on spin out rims. Tractor data reports it as 4000-4250LBS. Does that sound about right? I want to ballast it to be just under 5K with me on the seat, I'm 170 LBS. Both rear tires have calcium filled to about 2" below the center of the axle. I don't have any steel weights to play with yet, but depending on how I make out this year, I'd like to rig up better to run in a couple of weight classes. Thanks Richard

HI Mack, are you saying 4500 before calcium or including? From what I've read if the tire is full to to the top of the rim or 75% full it should have around 500 LBS of ballast. I would guess I have close to 300 LBS of calcium per tire or 600 LBS on top of bare tractor weight. I'm trying to stay below 5000 LBS so I'm not competing with the big guys in the 5-6000 Lb class. You're probably right, I may have to run as is light in the 5-6000 class this year. I'm a little unprepared for this pull due to work commitments. If I can get enough time to pull a little more fluid out before the match starts I'll try and drop below 5K. Next year I'll be set up better. Cheers

Most I see that show up fresh from the farm are in the 4500-5000 or so lb range. No fluid would get you close to 4000

My WD-45 with 4-bolt wide front and 14.9 x 28's weighs 3600-3650 lbs depending on how much gas is in the tank. Tire fluid chart shows right at 900 lbs of fluid for a pair of 14.9 x 28's if they are full to spec.

Not all tractor pull scales weigh the same. I found that out when I went to different pulls. I do not remember the weight of my ‘54 WD 45 with narrow front and no belt pulley. Nice to have a couple of weights that can be added or removed.

Rolled the WD45 over the scale tonight, its 4420 with both rears half full of calcium and me on it. If I drained the tires I'd be below 4000 for sure. Next year I'll pull the 3250-4000 class. My 8N weighed in at 2495, 5 LBS to the good so Im in the Ultra featherweight sub 2500 Lb group. Can't wait for tomorrow to play the game...
