Was last WD 160384 in 1954 then first WD45 146607 in 1953 but last 45 of 1954 160385, it's hard to understand. Why start at 146607. Were WD and 45 both made at same time? My WD45 is serial no. 148561 so one of the first 2000 made and a 1953 model what changes were made during the years of production. Thanks for any information.

I'll take a shot, but I'm not 100% sure I'm right.
I BELIEVE 160384 was the last WD and it was made in 1953. Again I BELIEVE 160385 was the first WD-45 and I believe it was built in 1953. (Are you sure yours is a WD-45?) Changes? Not a lot. The first WD's had the pin hitch, then the snap coupler came along (and I BELIEVE it was an option). The WD-45 went from a 3 bolt front end to a 4 bolt in the late years. Of course the WD had the 201 (4" stroke and 4" bore) with a 3" head and a removable plate on the right side of the block, where the WD-45 had the 226 (4.5" stroke and 4" bore) with a 4" head with no removable plate. The early WD's had a magneto and then later changed over to a distributor The WD had a straight shift lever with straight cut gears inside and the WD-45 had a curved shifter with angle cut gears (I believe some late WD's had the curved shifter and angle cut gears). |

Someone posted on here not long ago, that the very first few WD45's still had the pin hitch. He claimed they bought a new pin hitch WD45.

I have a WD-45 with a pin hitch. Either someone changed it before I got it or the snap coupler was an option.

I have a Spring 1957 build WD45 with original paint that did NOT ever have a snap-coupler on it. No latches or snap coupler bell or release lever. There was obviously a way to order it "deleted" from the Factory, even tho it was a standard equipment feature.

Last WD was WD146606. First WD45 was WD146607. They weren't made at the same time. My grandfather bought the first WD45 that the dealer in our town sold in the fall of 1953. It had to have the snap coupler added later.

Norm Swinford's explanation of the situation was the WD got the curved lever trans when they were ready and all of the early units were used in production. Same with WD45 production. They just continued the serial number sequence from WD production on through WD45 production.
