I am restoring a 49 WD for a guy, and he wants a 12 volt generator. Whats the best way to go about doing this? I also want to keep this looking as factory as possible. Somebody once told me that a shop can rewire a 6v genny into a 12v. Is this true, and if so, is there a 12v cutout that looks and mounts like the 6v?

A GM generator from a 1955 to 1962 vehicle would get you there but the field frame might be a little longer (someone just posted picture of one and regulator ) a cut out relay is out there as my HD5 used one with the 12 V system , as there was no ignition switch the cutout relay was used and only 2 sets of point coils. I think i would go with later regulator and mount on battery box instead of cutout.

the original generator can be made into 12 volt, I have a local shop who has done six of them for me, then I use a 12 volt regulator from valu-bilt or steiner tractor, they mount in the same place as the cutout (but they are maybe twice the size). looks prety close to original, and you can still run positive ground.

I've done quite a few Gennies converted over from 6V-12V. As a matter of fact, I have one on the bench right now that I'm doing for a customer. The 12V gennie chassis' are a fuzz longer as Coke mentioned, but can be used with little mod's to the gennie bracket spacing and do the job. 12V cutouts are available. We have em' in stock. They're a little different looking than the OEM Delco unit, but are about the same size as a stock unit, and look more authentic than the larger Voltage Regulators. I leave it up to the customer to decide what he or she wants and how authentic they want it, and I just builld it...

Okay, thanks for the info guys. Steve, I'm assuming that a new wiring harness for 6v would be the same as 12v if a cutout is used again?

Mike,
The 6V wiring can be used for 12V providing its in good condition, but wiring the 12V system properly, is a little bit different. Depending on what amp gennie you decide to use, if you want to keep the Ammeter, you'll need to bump the old 20/20 sweep Ammeter to a 60/60 sweep for safety, or plop a Voltmeter in its place. Also, a key switch should be used to control power on board the Tractor. Any questions, give us a call. Be glad to walk ya through anything you might have questions on.
