Under load the left rear wheel starts to slip and squeal pretty loud
At least I'm pretty sure it's coming from the wheel, There's a chance it could be the differential
I just wondered if anyone had ever had this problem and knew what sort of repair I might have to prepare for

When you say "squeal" makes me think it's the clutch as every thing else behind that is gears and if they were "slipping" you would be hearing crunching sounds or it wouldn't move at all.

Hi, thanks for responding
I'm certainly not a great mechanic, but I'm pretty sure this is coming from left rear wheel or differential, it feels like it's right underneath me.
I have been looking at the clutch, trying to adjust it, and left it with the fingers just off the throw out bearing.
and as I write I just thought of a test, to put the brake on the left wheel and see if that stops the slipping/squealing.
Do you think that would be an adequate test?

Is the rim slipping on the center, dang its been close to 25 years since I worked on a WC. Memory sucks, If the rim is slipping on the center you will need a used center and a used rim. Once they start slipping they wont stay tight.

I tried holding the brake on the wheel when it was slipping, and thought it did allow the other wheel to start, but then the tractor stalled. That brake lever is inconvenient and makes it difficult to manage other controls at the same time.
I worked with the tractor a bit under less load and occasionally when it slipped I started to think it might have been the clutch making the noise.
I'm going to try and get a friend over to see if he can tell where the noise is coming from
If it is the clutch that's probably easier to replace than taking the rear end apart

If it is slipping on the rim, it will be obvious when you look at the rim. MACK

I guess you mean the rubber wheel slipping on the metal rim,
I hadn't even thought of that possibility, but there would probably be a mess of fluid spilled all over and a flat tire if that was happening, that wheel has a tube inside, so if the wheel slipped it would have torn off the valve stem.

sorry, I just saw your message about the rim and center, and I will have to take your word for that since that whole mechanism is unexplored territory.
I will keep it in mind as I go forward with this repair.
Is it a difficult job? Is it possible to do an adjustment to keep it going for a while longer?

Brake shoes hanging? They can squeal pretty good but won't make the wheel slip. Is the tractor slowing down when it squeals like it is losing tractor or drive?

sorry to be so long getting back here, but I did have a chance to test drive it some more and have refined my observations a bit.
At one point trying to back up a hill the left rear wheel was slipping and at other times I could hear the clutch slipping as well. The clutch noise was more like one would expect, but the wheel did squeel
pulling on the left hand brake (short of stopping the wheel altogether) actually got the wheel turning and I was able to back up the hill to more level ground
so replacing the clutch seems an imperative and i'm looking for a mechanic close by for that since it involves removing the engine.
i'm wondering if the wheel might just be an adjustment of some kind--between the brake and final drive.
I'm also guessing that previous post about rim and center had to do with the inner mechanism which I was pretty clueless about at the time, but am starting to understand more
The PDF tech manual I was sent will prove invaluable when it comes time to rehab the beast and i'm grateful for all the guidance (and manuals) I've received through this forum. It may take a while to actually get to the work, but when (if) I get to taking the machine apart I'll post again with what I find.
