 Topic: WC running rough while Idling

Got an Unstyled WC that runs smoothly under a load. However if it's just sitting in neutral running the throttle surges. Carb and timing adjustments didn't change anything. Gonna adjust the valves and see if any are sticking tomorrow. Any other suggestions?

Idling and surging could be a small vacuum leak somewhere. Spray a little carb cleaner around the intake manifold, Carb base, and where the intake meets the cylinder head. If you hit a spot where all of a sudden the engine smooths out and the surge is gone, you've probably found your vacuum leak. Also could be a little dirt in the idle circuit or a low float setting.... HTH Steve@B&B

I'm going to say it's a carb issue, adjusting the valves will do nothing for a surging engine.

I should add that the carb is off of a perfectly running D-17. Before the carb swap I sealed the manifold gaskets with high temp permatex just to rule it out. I'll be putting the original carb back on once I go through it again and see why it wouldn't stay running with it on there. I figured it was a fuel issue as my D-17 will surge while working if the load screw isn't out enough. May end up having the manifold planed and install new gaskets.

Check the distributor shaft for bushing slop, and check the advance mechanism for proper operation, either of those may give you similar issues.

Ten Amendments, Ten Commandments, and one Golden Rule solve most every problem. Citrus hand-cleaner with Pumice does the rest.
