putting my wc back together and having some issues....here's the first...i'm tired and cranky and must be missing something. put the engine back in my wc. before that i bolted the clutch assembly on the back of the engine and adjusted it according to the manual. good news, engine started right up. bad news, i have no clutch, and cannot put tractor in gear. just grinds. checked the adjustment. manual calls for 1/4 inch between fingers and bearing. i had about 1/2 inch. adjusted it down to 1/4. still no clutch. readjusted down to an 1/8 of an inch, besides getting more of a pedal each time, no change. still cannot put tractor in gear. any ideas on what i'm missing here? of course i'm in a hurry, trying to get ready for next week-ends show.....thanks alan

a few more bits of info....these are not the same components that i took out of the wc. i switched the flywheel to one with a ring gear (i'm converting a 36 to electric), and used a different used clutch plate. pressure plate is original.

If you've adjusted the clutch that much and it didn't make a difference and still grinds bad, then it's either in backwards or it's badly bent. Since it won't work like that, you'll need to take the engine back out and unbolt the unit from the flywheel. Once you do that, lay the disc on the pressure plate and press around the outside edge of the disc with your thumb...if it jumps up at you, then it's bent and needs reflattened...if possible or a different one. Both flywheels are the same depth...with the ring gear or without. Rick |

rick-- you were right. i pulled the engine out again. not only was the clutch disk not flat, the metal portion was cracked and split. i suspect i may have damaged it somehow when i was putting the engine in.....i didn't notice any major issues at the time, but i'm not sure what else could have happened. i guess i should have had more than just the cat helping me guide it in. anyhow, i put another disk in, put the engine back in the tractor, and now the clutch works. thanks for the help. now on to the next issues. alan

alan,
Glad you got it worked out. Sorry I wasn't any help. I wish the dr would clear me for lifting again, this detached retina thing is making me crazy. I have to come visit sometime soon.
