If you don't know history of tractor, is it possible to know condition of a CA's hand clutch assembly from looking at the unit?

For instance, there is a +$500 unit on Ebay. This is a screen shot of it. I belive the clutch plates and wear material are visible.

Really hard to tell what you have until it's in pieces. The brake area looks about as good as any I've seen. You can see two bolt-heads missing, not a good sign. There's no way to tell how thick the disc is or how rusty the plates are until it's apart.

I would not sink $500 in it!

I got to know several CA owners over the years of delivering fuel to the farmers or doing farm tire work for them. Almost all of them that had CA's had taken the hand clutch apart, drilled holes in them and bolted them solid. They all said the CA was a great little tractor, but the hand clutch was very unreliable. I would like to have one with a wide front and a disk to do gardens. Good luck with yours.
