I've got a S 1 D17 with one orange front wheel, one cream. The rears are silver rims with cream centers. Also cream grill. You can see orange where the cream is peeling off. The hood decals are from a SII or SIII. Came from some place in WI, the dealer tag is still visible.
If I ever repaint I'm going to go with the cream wheels and grill. Just looks nicer than the solid orange. Not sure about the decals but I kinda like the newer large ones, might stick with them.

AC WD45 - The WD45's shipped to Canada also had orange front rims and orange rear wheels.
My dad was an Allis dealer in southern Ontario starting in 1953.
I have a couple of pictures of me at age 7 sitting on the first pair of WD45's that he received.
In all those early years I never seen any WD45's with cream wheels.
In his later years (1990's) fathers hobby was refurbishing and painting old Allis tractors.
He always painted WD and WD45 front rims and rear wheels orange.

I need to, as its the only one I've ever seen. Just trying to remember the last time I had any contact with the owner reveals it closer to 10 years ago than yesterday. Time sure flys when you're not paying attention. I hadn't even thought about that tractor until today and this topic.

I find it hard to believe the in-hood dash but who knows. I'm pretty sure the hinged seat is from an aftermarket company. I don't think AC ever produced it but I don't have a parts catalog to look it up.

D-15 was the very first unit painted PO#2 and cream and others soon followed, that is pretty well documented. Adding to what Skip said I remember our dealer painting every 14, 17, WD or 45 that got traded in with PO#2 and cream wheels. At the very least they painted the rear wheels and front rims with cream. We have an 55 WD-45D with a very old PO1 and cream paint job and if a person didnt know better he'd swear the cream wheels were original.

Here's a still picture of the tractor in the video. The white decal on the gas tank is a dealer decal - but I can't remember what it says (kinda faded). The pilot is the young man who actually owns the tractor. I helped the young man find it and he is learning how to use it on my place. He's my daughter's fiancee', so he'd dang well better learn the AC way of doing things.

Whoa Whoa! I know that tractor in the video - because I'm the dude driving it!
The paint, the rim color, and the decals are NOT original. It has been repainted and was brought into middle Tennessee from Indiana about 20 years ago. All the discussion about "dressing them up" to look more modern definitely applies to this tractor. The guy we bought it from painted the wheels white himself.
However, the one trait I have witnessed is a WD45 not far from where the one in the video was bought. A WD45 bought new at Smithville, TN in 1957 after the D17's were on the lot. That WD45 has the in-hood "dashboard" like a WD45 diesel, but was a gas burner and has the short hood of a gas burner. Factory power steering, hinged seat, all the possible goodies a WD45 could have. The orginal owner still has it and can verify it was one of the "last" WD45's built and was discounted due to the appearance of the D17 (which is why he bought it). All orange paint, no white wheels. The in-hood dash is what he claims to be the sure sign of the last WD45's ever sent out. I've tried numerous times to buy that tractor, because its one of the finest looking WD45's I've ever seen. I had a '53 WD with the curved shift lever. I sold it at auction in Aug of '65 at Charlotte MI. I don't know where it went. I've often wondered if it's still around. Could it be this one? Dusty

Depending on when someone repainted a tractor they may have had limited options. The series II D17 I have my dad repainted 25 years ago using series IV paint scheme and badges because at the time that was all you could get.

My brother bought a WD, (end of season) and it had a 45 engine in it. His dealer told him that they had used up all the WD engines.

According to Allis WD Parts Catalog the transmission straight shift lever ended and the curved shift lever started around Serial 127003 in early 1953,before the start of WD45 production around serial 146XXX.

I was told it was common practice for farmers and and dealers to repaint older tractors with PO2 and cream wheels to "match" the newer models. I've seen many Bs, Cs, CAs, WCs, WDs, WD45s and early D17s painted bright orange with cream or white wheels. I recently saw a WD45 with flat top fenders, chasis painted black, wheels painted silver and the sheetmetal I'd guess was corporate orange. I would have preferred the original fenders but I will say it looked sharp!

I have a late WD (serial #144707) and it's got a WD engine block but a distributer instead of a mag, and a WD45 tranny (curved shifter and tapered gears)
I was told that was pretty much the norm in 1953 during the transition from WD to the WD45 with the "power crater" engine and tapered tranny gears

We would change the paint color on nice WD45s to PO #2 with cream wheels as it dressed em up a little more for selling. Im sure the tractor in the vid is a repaint, as far as the decals, Ive seen 45s with the same decals, you couldnt buy the correct decal for the hood since the late 70s from AC, so some guys just used whatever. A guy up the road has a late WD with a curved shifter and a distributor mount like a WD-45 if I remember right he said it was one of the last WDs acording to the serial #

The story's about WD trans going in the WD45's is haft true the last runs of the late 1952 into the first 1953 WD's had a mix of trans in them. But not the WD45s. Boy will this start something. LOL |

Im an old timer, too and Ill tell you like the others. no cream white until 1960. SOME of the dealers put on cream white wheels when they repainted a trade in to make it look more modern and "current"

I was told by an old timer that at the end of the WD45 production they were using all of the left over parts to finish the assembly of them. Was told near the very end if there was a WD block there they used it, straight shifter tranny they used it. Maybe they didn't have any rims for the very end and used D series rims to finish up with?

It's interesting a guy I know has a very lte model WD45D and the rear centres are cream as well and it doesn't look like there was ever any orange ever on them.

The white boxed decal contained the triangular A-C logo which did not come out until the mid 60's.
