What is a good way of getting rid of squirrels that are digging up the landscaping around the house? Can't be there all the time to shoot them. I have dogs around so can't poison them. Going to get some live traps, what is good bait to get them into the trap? I thought about what I use for pocket gophers, Juicy Fruit gum, but again don't want the dogs eating it.

Yep, corn. Dad just chucks an ear into the back of the trap. Caught more than he could count. Not sure you could ever catch enough of them to save the yard but does make one feel better

If they are under ground I would try Juicy Fruit gum it works great on pocket gophers.

For regular ones , tie the ear of corn to the trip pan, that way they cant sneak it out!--I had them take the ears from the trap unless they are tied down.
For the ground kind --- Gopher gasser works good. --- In tunnel vole killer pellets will get them too.

My brother used to entertain himself with gophers or ground squirrels by making a slip knot in the end of his 30 lbs test line on a snagging pole. Set the loop over the hole, string out some line and sit down in the lawn chair. Soon as one stuck it's head up out the hole, he "set the hook" Wink

I had a bigger critter in the barn. Ground hog had made a few holes in there so I threw in a 3" chlorine tablet into each hole and then filled them in. If he's in there, he will come out and not go back in because of the fumes. Not a permanent solution but will keep them away for a year or two it seems.

Caught 2 groundhogs in the live trap this summer. Not the best thing to have around the yard.

I have had great success using a conibear/duke 110 trap, usually used for mink and muskrat. Use a backing board with two roofing nails, place a 1" section of ear corn on the trigger, hang the trap so squirrel runs up/down to it. Youtube has videos on how to set it up. I have used peanut oil, peanut butter and big marshmallows but ear corn works best

Mike,
What do you use for bait in the live trap?

We used fruit loops and cat food to catch the squirrels last year. Put the trap beside the house on the east side under the trees. Caught some of the barn cats they weren't happy but did catch the squirrels. They wouldn't go in the small trap but did go in the med large trap.

Conibear on board ( maybe use a longer board with corn cob chunk speared or wired onto trigger trip mechanism or other ingredients like sho-man1 says ).

Dusty, I caught the first one with an apple, the second it was baited with a 'Tom Cat' bait chunk. That's what the coons like. That's a long story in it's own right!
