Anybody see the coverage of this?  Pretty amazing that no one got hurt.  Looks like United will be buying one guy a new Dodge pickup and another family a major roof and interior repair in Broomfield, CO.  Some friends of mine live a mile or so west of where the debris fell.  Said they heard an explosion, thought it was a sonic boom.  Had the engine shelled out 3 seconds later it might have left parts in their neighborhood.

I was amazed how many of the passengers took another plane on to Hawaii last night.  Could be they felt they were lucky anyway, may as well go somewhere warm, unless they had started from Denver.  I wonder if that plane will ever fly again, it's a 200 series, I think, getting a bit old.  They will have to do a major inspection and probably overhaul. I wonder if the FAA would allow it to fly to a scrap yard in AZ on one engine?

Lucky passengers in that the failed blade did not enter the passenger space, that would event to a Passenger Compartment Explosive Decompress.  Large pieces fell all along flight path where was amazed the nacelle nose lip survived intact(And HEAVY), surprised no more collateral damage on ground, again really lucky.

Dweebs on Lame Stream Media are calling for all 777s to be grounded, that engine series is used in many other applications.

 JEEEEZE,,,,that right there is one scary pic especially when you is the one taking it,,!! I never did like flying,,,EXCEPT for when we got to go one them "Boonie Trips" every other year,,,,,Wink
 One year I HAD to go with the CEO and the Refinery Manager to Illinois to look at a refinery the company was gonna buy,,,"on the company plane". After a couple of days inspecting,,,we are loaded up and taxiing when all of a sudden,,,the friggin plane takes a BIG nose dive,,,and,,,,and,,,now the Refinery Mgr was a BIG,,no,,he was a huge man at 6' and almost 400 lbs,,,he litterly flew out of his chair as the seat belt would not go around him and his "special seat" had no arm rests,,LOL,,the plane is yawin back and forth down the runway and the CEO is hollaring at the pilot askin "WHAT THE F IS GOIN ON",,,AND the Ref Mgr is rolling back and forth on the deck,,HIM also hollarin more new  cusswords than I had ever heard,,,!!!  Course,, I mighta been hollarin myself,,but couldn't hear for all their noises.
 The poor pilot finally gets it shut down and he is one scaired fellar!! He told us that one of the engines had almost shut down,,so he shut it off,,,???
 When we get back to the tower, the Ref Mgr tells the CEO,,Me and Joe are gonna rent a car and DRIVE home,,so you can go ahead and fire me right now!!  What was I to do??
 We drive home and fortunatly, we pick up the CEO's wife in Odessa, Tx and drive her home so ,,,no harm, no foul,,,,,LOL AND,,,that's the troot,,!!

Debris puncturing wouldn't likely have much of an 'explosive decompression' as it was well below altitude where a pressure differential would be high enough to matter.  Drafty?
  Yes.  I'd be more concerned with electrical, fuel, and hydraulics, and of course, injured passengers.

And before anyone jumps to conclusions why I'd list passengers last:

They're actually FIRST... but an uninjured passenger will remain as such, so long as the aircraft is able to recover and return.
If the aircraft has severed electricals, an interior fire will likely asphyxiate them.
If the aircraft has severed fuel, it will leak, and likely catch fire, which on the INSIDE of the airframe, is catastrophic...
If the aircraft has severed hydraulics, it will lose much of it's operational control, and not be as able to navigate to a safe landing.

So... keeping the plane in control, and able to fly it back to safe landing, determines the safety of the uninjured passengers, and expedites the injured to immediate medical care.

It is amazing that nobody was hurt on the ground.  These things happen... and we're blessed by happenstance that worse does not.

I'm amazed, that amidst the serious conflicts that occurred through the 20th century, that more people were not hurt by ballistic munitions (bullets, shells, etc) that missed their targets.  Of ALL the times Grandpa told you NOT to shoot the .22 at any target that wasn't backed up by the ground, HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of antiaircraft rounds flew through the sky...  which is why we wear helmets in combat.  The direct-fire is gonna go through, but the strays will likely bounce off.
Ten Amendments, Ten Commandments, and one Golden Rule solve most every problem. Citrus hand-cleaner with Pumice does the rest.

speaking of that Dave, I commented to my wife that it appeared they could not shut the fuel off to that engine. the way that engine was shaking from the imbalance of the wind driven blades and and the fire without the heat shields, I'll bet there was a desire of the driver to get it on the ground!
I am still confident of this;
I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.
Wait for the Lord;
be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord. Ps 27

The flight was cleared to land on the east west runways, the pilot asked which runway, ATC said your choice, we're shut down until you are safely on the ground!

My neighbors were on the United flight that crashed in Sioux City, Iowa 30+ years or so ago, they were among the 184 who walked away but 112 didn't.  The cause was the turbine wheel in the tail engine breaking and severing the rudder hydraulic lines which quickly drained the oil and lost use of the control surfaces, flaps, etc.  The only way the pilots were able to fly it was using the two wing engines to more or less steer it.   Capt. Al Haynes did what has never been able to do on the simulator.  Some times you just get lucky, but skill has a lot to do with being lucky.
The 777 has three redundant controls, so chances of something happening like 30 years ago is less likely. But when an engine blows up pieces fly into other pieces and maybe the fuel shut off didn't.  They will figure it out some day.
