 Topic: turn signals on the '28 Chev

Anyone have any idea what the lens might have been made of! the 'lenses' is some sort of plastic like material sandwiched between two metal discs that ore riveted together. Opaque in the front lights, red in the rear. I'm pretty sure thee are after market, but still have been on this truck for a very long time. I would like to rebuild them if I can.
Interesting, the curled up mounting piece on this one is not present on the left side.  |

Yes: Aftermarket for sure. Back in 28 a turn/stop signal was various contortions of your left arm. I'm sure that would be most likely some sort of plastic, slightly possible thin glass. I'd think if you could carefully remove the rivets, you'd find there was just a colored disc of some translucent material. Colored Lexan or plexiglass would be a possible replacement.

I'm in the process of dismantling one as we speak. you are correct, it is some sort of plastic like material. If you look close at the pic, the original material has cracked and curled as though subjected to hi heat, but I doubt it was actually HI heat, more likely IV from sun |

Find someone in the theater production industry. They used colored filters on the stage lights. Probably not uv stable for long term but these vehicles would likely be stored inside most of there remaining life

Nice truck! I have a set of after market turn signals that the previous owner added in about 1945. The plastic was bad like yours. I was lucky to have a friend give me two front and two rear lights with the plastic in good shape. I put new bulbs and sockets in them and everyone likes the look. I like having the safety of the turn signals. Even though they are not true to the year of our 32 Ford big truck. Good luck. Regards, Chris and Cheryl

Did you mean  65 rather than 45? I ask because I can remember when all the old farm trucks had to be updated with turn signals out here and it was mid 60. Cause my rememberer did not start working until 58 to 60. I remember the handle up top behind the drivers door with cable to metal strip with reflectors on it for turn signals. So unless your truck started in rich folks business, no frugal farmer would changed until gubberment said you had to. The only disadvantage I can think of was they did not self cancel after the turn. And the clicky,click was not that loud. So many a farmer drove for mile with it blinking.
