 Topic: Truck Tool Boxes

I got an 08 Silverado with an 8' bed. Been looking at getting an in-bed tool box. I think i want the one that sits in the bed behind the cab and not up on the side rails behind the cab. First question is any advice on what to buy? Also, how are they secured down in the bed? Thanks.

Steve, Weatherguard makes a nice all-purpose chest, You'll pay more for them but the guality is top notch. I just upfitted my 08 GMC HD with their 127-0-1 aluminum saddle box and a 174-0-1 Lo-side stadard box. Industrial Ladder has good prices and free freight. Good Luck, Mike

The saddle box is secured down with 2" wide J brackets that clip to the underside fo the pick-up box and are drawn tight with threaded bolts. I would guess that a chest would need to be bolted to the bed. HTH, Mike

Steve,
I got my truck boxes at the DeeZee factory outlet store
and saved at least 50%
Inventory changes with weekly shipments they receive.
I always call ahead to see what they have.

I attached my chest type box using self tapping screws into the bed floor. I used fender washers under the heads.

I have a weatherguard and like it. I also bought mine on industrial ladder. Mine sits up on the rails so I dont know how the chest would latch down. Looking back I wish I would have bought the chest style.

A word of advice i learnd this after my first rail box. when bolting the box down have a rubber strip the with of the box where you are bolting it down and just snug the bolts down leave room for a little movement so when the rails flex it won't crack the box.

Chest type is definately best. The crossboxes will break welds in your box if you carry enough crap in the toolbox which we all do.
Ranchhand ( www.ranchhand.com) makes a good one. It is simple and rugged and you put your own padlock on it. |

Depends on what you're carrying in your tool box. If you're carrying wrenches, the Montezuma is the handiest box you'll ever buy, but mounting them is much less straight foreward. In my opinion, try picking up a few chests, and you'll know which one is the best. My dad's got a jobox and it is dang well built, as evidenced by the fact it weighs about 300lbs. I like to have a Montezuma behind the driver, and a wheel-well box opposite for jumper cables and the like.

I don't know exactly what you mean but I have a chest type that sits down in the box, just one big compartment for chains and binders, got mine at TSC but is made by DeeZee, said in instructions to not fasten it down with self taping screws but they are in the mounting hardware, for temp use I just tarp strapped to the box tie downs, It is a below box line level.

Thanks for the info guys. Been doing my research and it looks like the chest style for permanent use needs to be screwed into the floor of my bed, and I would hate to put unnecessary holes in my truck. The one that sits on the rails uses j bolts, looking like the better option now for me. If anyone knows of any chest styles without screwing holes in my bed let me know. Thanks.

I have a delta champion in my 08 Chevrolet in lieu of drilling holes in the bed i bolted it to the rubber bed mat. with all the tools i have in the tool box itself it doesn't move any....
