 Topic: Trouble torquing D14 head bolt

I have one of the short head bolts that is not stretching but will not go above 60ft lbs. Could the threads in the block be bad? They all looked good when I started.

Take the bolt out. Check length of bolt and length of hole. Check all threads. Maybe run tap into hole. Hole is not full of liquid or something?

When I rebuilt my D14 a couple of years ago, I had the same problem, except with all the bolts. I think the book calls for 85 ft pounds or so of torque, but at 70 all the bolts would start stretching and stretching and would go no tighter or they would ring off. I got on this forum and everyone told me yes 85 is correct, your bolts must be bad, so I bought new studs, good ones, not cheap and they did the same thing. Then one poster said to put them to 60 and forget about it, maybe retorque to 60 after run in, so that’s what I did, torqued them all to 60 and retorqued after break in.
I’ve had no problem in the years since and I run and work the tractor pretty hard. I can’t tell you what to do, but if it was mine I’d put them all at 60 and forget about it.

So I pulled the head and the threads look fine. I got a shorter grade 5 bolt and torqued it in to 80 but that was it. I think it was the combo of my adding the Snap On ratchet device to the wrench and adding a grade 8 washer under each bolt. The parts manual calls out a washer but under only one bolt. Does not say which bolt but I assume its the tall one in the center. So I will have t order another head gasket and install the bolts with no washers and remove the ratchet from the torque wrench. If I can get 70 I will call them all good.

I pulled the head and checked all are good. I will get new bolts and gasket and call it a day.

80-85 ft lbs on a 7/16" bolt has to be grade 8 quality, not grade 5. Check the marks on the bolt head....gr 8 is 6 dash marks.

All threads should be cleaned out with a tap and blown out. Makes a big difference as the bolt goes in and helps to prevent cross threading and the above problem.
