I recently picked up a 310 D Allis lawn tractor.  Got it running after a little tinkering, but I cant get it to shift into 2nd or reverse (both on the back side of the shift pattern). I can feel a little bit of a "detent" where if feels like I should be able to shift side to side, but I cant get it to respond.  1st and 3rd work fine and shift without jumping.  Is this something external, or is it something I need to tear into, and if so, any words of advice?
Thanks in advance

Thanks for the links.  I picked up quite a bit from looking at them, but I dont really think I have the same problem that those posts show how to fix.  When I put it in neutral, it is in neutral. I can shift into 3rd and 1st just fine, and it drives and acts like it should.  I just cant get anything on the back side of the transmission.  Maybe the back shift fork is stuck in neutral and I can use the "screwdriver fix" they use to get more leverage to free it?

Look at the shifter rod through the fill hole and see if its moving the rear fork. It could have the lower part of it broke off. Normally when it breaks off it get stuck in gear though. Won't shift or move. I guess they could have got it back into natural? If fork is broken it will require the transmission to be disassembled! You can down load parts and service pages from Simple Tractor site and best to ask for help there.
