 Topic: transmission/hydraulic oil for allis C

Just got a 3-point kit to put on and in the course of replacing the bottom studs on axle for the cylinder bracket its obvious they arent a blind hole and go into the oil cavity of the transmission. I changed the oil when I first got this tractor 4 years ago and I put 303 fluid in it. Will that work ok or do I need something diffrent. Oil that came out was about a gallon and looked alright but I may just put fresh in regardless to be safe.

I asked the same question yesterday because the AC book specifies SAE 20 which is not available around here. There were several replies, but now the whole post seems to have vanished. Maybe somehow I accidentally deleted it. Anyway, more than one person said yes, 303 is OK.

When I sold them with my father SAE 20 non-detergent was the standard. That was in the 40's to 60's. However, this is the 21st century. The oil industry has vastly improved. There are much better Hydraulic-Transmission oils out there. Since I have been away from the tractor field I cannot recommend an oil to use but I have heard good reports on the hy-trans oils available. Perhaps someone will chime in with experienced suggestions. Good Luck! Bill Long

Can't speak to the 303, but I have been running Fleet Farm brand universal tractor trans/hyd. fluid in my '41 'C' for awhile now without issue. Runs the small ram connected to the rotating rear bar as well as can be expected. Ben

John Deere 303 oil contained sperm whale oil, which has been banned since the early 70's, so a true 303 fluid can no longer exist. The current oils branded 303 have worked fine for many, but given sale of oils labelled as 303 have been banned in some states due to content and quality issues, I choose to go with a better grade of UTF meeting AGCO's 821 0r 821-XL fluid and/or John Deere's J20C, for a few dollars more. That's my choice. A C doesn't have wet brakes or clutches (we hope), only gearing and hydraulics. So some of the additives in the current spec fluids are not as important in a C, and you have been ok with your oil so far. What you run in your tractor is your choice in the end.

almost anything will work in the B-C as long as it is not too THICK.. The pump does not like THICK oil... You can use a straight 20 wt, a 10-w30 motor oil, or some type of Universal Tractor fluid... HYTRANS or other names for it.... I would look at the SPEC on the bucket to see what you are getting, but if it meets a couple specs for JD, CASE or C3, it should be fine...... Many today use UNIVERSAL TRACTOR FLUID, of any brand.. they sell it at Wal Mart, Farm Stores and NAPA among others. ........... it should hold 7 quarts
