Changing trans and hydraulic oil on 185 and I'm leaning toward Case/Int.
Hy-Trans. Right direction? |

The correct answer is to use whatever fluid meets or exceeds the original Allis spec.
My answer is that you should use whatever good hydraulic oil that you use in your other tractors. I have John Deere oil in mine because that's the same as the other tractors. If you have IH oil in your other tractors, I'm confident that would meet Allis specs.

Thanks Allis Dave, the 185 is actually my first tractor, other than a Ford 8n that I inherited from Dad that I am currently trying to get un-stuck. The Allis is a recent purchase that I am going thru and I guess I might be a little too cautious.

Congratulations on your first. Make sure you drain and fill both compartments as stated in the owners manual and change the filter.
There is also a small final pan at the end of each axle and would be almost inside the rim. There are about 10 bolts to drop this and dump the oil. Requires a new final drive gasket and is filled with 80/90 gear oil up to the fill hole. Sometimes these are forgotten and not changed for many years.

So I was pulling the fill hole plug on the final pan on the left side, and a whole lot of milky crap came gushing out. That's when I noticed the nuts looked loose on the final housing to the sleeve.
Jacked up the tractor to tighten, when pulled half of a stud out.I pulled out housing with pinion shaft and was able to take a chisel and get the other half out. I have got it back together, and will get back to changing hydraulic fluid and filter tomorrow. I ended up making the final pan gaskets, and had to use 5/8 fine thread bolts instead of the studs because i was unable to locate either of them. Do you know of any place that has that kind of stuff? |

AC/DC, the OEM oil spec called for AGCO / AC's 821 fluid. Most containers will have a list of OEM spec numbers that it meets or exceeds, look for the 821 fluid in the list.
Hope you enjoy the tractor. I've owned and used AC 180, 185 and 200 tractors since the late 70's.
