I gotta buy a trailer to haul lots of my treasures away. trying to decide on a hyd tilt flat bed like a car hauler, no ramps, i'm to old to throw them around. or get one of them dump trailers with the sides. either way the ones i'm looking at cost about the same. watcha all think? gimme some suggestions. i will be hauling a few junk cars and trucks in/on it. I'm kinda leaning towards the dump trailer right now.

Contractors here went to small dumpers a few years back, the novelty has worn off where is impossible to reconfigure down to flat bed unlike a flat bed they can add sides to that can dump. Usually too heavy empty to load to any value and awkward as a generality to store when not needed and not needed as much after a specialty job is completed.
Cannot be side loaded with a fork lift nor unloaded with one except from the rear. When haul scrap makes it difficult for yard worker to use any machine to offload them, are however great for trash to the dump. |

ya kinda need both a 'car hauler' and a 'dump trailer'. When the local yard said no complete cars anymore(guv regs...),I sold my car hauler, then I'd haul pickup box over in dump trailer, cab in dump trailer, cut frame in half and into the dump trailer. EASY to unload..press a button..... This week took 2 loads of steel cutoffs(100s of pieces), about 3000# each, in the dump trailer. Guy 2 doors down rented 40yd 'bins', would fill, call and made money. Might be an option ?

Dale, I thought you was staying put on the property, and building a house?
Are you discarding this stuff, or just relocating to a different place? |

I have both a flat car trailer AND a dump trailer... both are fairly 'lightweight' in terms of build, so I'm sensitive to overloading. The dump trailer will carry 2 tons of gravel from the quarry 4 miles away, but that kind of load asks alot of the axles, and the trailer shows it. Any heavier, and I'll be unloading it with a shovel! I can't fit a car in the dumper, so if I hauled one, it'd hafta be in pieces. I CAN load it with my Kubota and Cub Cadet front end loaders, while the former will reach over the sides fairly well, it won't reach the middle, and the latter will just reach over in FRONT of the tires... but the latter will EASILY load it full by just driving up the ramp/gate. The car trailer is light, too... but I've added cribbing and carried a 5300lb radial drill press on it, towed by a Jeep Cherokee... I took my time, but it did fine. As noted, I can load things on and off with any of my forklifts, and the deck is just low enough that I can pick up a pallet of bricks, or an IBC tote, and set it right on using as well as forks on the 3 point of the D17. I really don't think I could do all that I do, with just one or the other, and I haven't seen anything that would handle both situations... if I went to a gooseneck/5th wheel dumper that was long enough, and wide enough to accept a whole car, it'd be too high to load from over the side, and I'd need a dedicated pickup truck to pull it... and it'd be too large to shuffle into the places that my current trailers easily go- I move 'em around with the Kubota, the Cub Cadet, and the D17. So get both.

I'm trying to Lars...they are making it difficult for me of course! I do gotta get rid of alot of stuff tho, was saving it for extra cash in retirement. well retirement is here, has been awhile, and if i'm able to keep the property, will need some extra cash for planting next year. The fact that i'm trying to keep the property is really upsetting the green farmers, and the stock holders think they are the greatest, I think they even called them and asked if I could keep part of the farm! If things fon't work out here, i'll still have the cash and have less to move later on. i do hafta measure the width of the vehicles so I don't get something to narrow to haul them on. I also figger that I can let the vehicles hang out the back of a dump trailer 4 ft or so if strapped in/on good. The scrap yard is on;y about 4 miles from me. as for getting a truck dumpster, that's not an option, others have got taken real bad on the weights when they used them. I'm gonna go look at some today.

I have a smaller flatbed that if i need to load anything on pallets i can as the sides fold down, it also has a ramp that folds up so i can haul my golf carts/6-wheeler/mower/what ever, but it's to short and narrow to haul vehicles unless like said I cut them up first. i have the crane that I can lift anything bulky on/off either trailer. If I need to haul tractors, a friend does that for me. and was thinking that if i have to build a new driveway, i could haul the rock and gravel myself since delivery charges around here are horrendous. the material is cheap, but not the delivery!

I guess it depends on what you are going to use the trailer for most.
In the past few years, I've had four trailers; a small 4' x 8' trailer that was Dad's (that practically never gets used), a 8' x 20' three axle trailer (that I no longer have), a 7' x 14' dump trailer and a 102" x 28' + 5' gooseneck (that I have changed to pin = fifth wheel hitch). I do a lot of tractor parades and a couple shows, so the gooseneck gets used a lot. However, if I could only own one trailer, I will never part with my dump trailer. It is, by far, the most used of my trailers. A local trailer sales dealer used to have a sign up "Need more friends? Buy a trailer!" Very true!!!

I don't own a dump trailer but have access to one when I haul scrap. Nothing better in my opinion. Go to unload, hit a button and you're empty.
One thing about trailers is that they're holding their value and increasing. Consider buying a dump and a car hauler and selling one or both off when you're done!

Like the others have said it depends on what you use it for most. Cousin has a tilt bed that is just the berries for hauling his tractors to shows, etc. I have a dove tail gooseneck. Handles much, much better than a bumper pull. Hope you find one that works best for you.

I think I would go with the dump, it has ramps if you need to drive something on and as said push a button and unload or I think most scrap yard have magnets to unload you.

Does the salvage yard have a trailer available to rent/borrow if you sell to them?
When we cleaned up my place the yard that was in Atlantic had a couple short dump trailers they'd bring out and leave. IF you had it filled in 2 days no charge, think was $100/day if longer; 3 days $300/ 4 days $400. At 25+ miles I was too far away they wouldn't bring to me. Have you checked trailer places like in Co Bl/ Omaha area for rentals? Or buy 1 use it and sell when done. |

Tilt bed with a good electric wench.
Diesel is 5+ a gallon. Of course delivery is high. When you consider how much more they can haul than a dump trailer it doesn’t seem much better to haul your own. Loading cars in a dump trailer can be a pain. |

re: Does the salvage yard have a trailer available to rent/borrow if you sell to them? the story... Local scrap yard, 3 owners ago.....I saw guys drop off dump trailer next to steel spiral staircase. I figure they're going home to measure up for the staircase(I looked at it for months.). Walk into office get talking to Wayne... He said,' it's scrap, 100$ a ton, I need to double my money, take a look'. It took me about 3 minutes to say SOLD here's the 200! Drove Troy, D-14 #1, over to hookup my best deal of the century. She may not be 'purdy' ,but she;s hauled tons and tons of scrap and pony poop over 12-15 years. Only one of two 'vehicles' I ever MADE money on... Loading literally tons of little pieces or even a few heavies isn't fun anymore, WORSE at the 'unloading' end of the trip. BTW scrap's gone from $300 to $240 a net ton here near Hamilton,Ontario. That's a 20% LOSS from a month ago.

I’ve had both kinds of trailers. I’ve gotten way more use out of my H&H Speedliader tilt deck than I ever got out of my dump trailer. The dump is dangerous for loading tractors or equipment because it’s relatively high up, has a steel deck and you have to use ramps. The tilt deck with a winch is super smooth for loading because it’s always under control. When I had the dump trailer I used to haul my Oliver OC-46 in it until the day I almost slid it off the ramps sideways because of a lack of traction and having to break over from the ramps to the deck of the trailer. Since I got the tilt deck I put the winch cable on the rear drawbar and back onto the trailer with no worries about sliding. The tricycle allis drive or back right on easy and safe. I’ve have a lot of scrap on the tilt deck and they just pick it off at the scrap yard with the magnet or grapple. My vote would be for the tilt deck.

I would not use a dump trailer to be hauling good tractors around ! It's the wrong trailer, period. Waaay too high off the ground, need looooong ramps, usually no tiedowns in the box. Dump trailers are GREAT at being filled up with junk and then with a press of a button ,'magically' the load is GONE and cash in your pocket. Now a 'car hauler' is great at ,well, hauling cars ( and tractors and trucks) but NOT good at all hauling 4000# of loose misc steel !It's also terrible to unload the MESS. If it took you 3 hrs to load,it'll be another 2-3 hrs to unload, piece by piece by piece by piec.....

Well...I don't hafta get in a hurry to haul anything out now, but may still get a trailer, one or the other. I am buying part of the farm, where I live, and I guess i'm gonna be a farmer again! Will hafta buy another tillage tractor, there's an awesum 4-W305 on Big Iron auction, but the price is growing fast! I'll let ya'll know which trailer I buy in the coming months! Ray...all my trucks run. my main ones are: 1997 GMC 1-ton 4x4 diesel lomg box single wheel, another is a 2003 Dodge 4-door diesel dually 4x4, another is a 1986 Chevy single cab gasser 4x4 long box, I did just lose the timing chain on it tho, no big deal replacing that! all of them have at least 300,000 miles on them and are still great trucks! the GMC is the one I bought from the stripper! it's a big boy truck! hafta ask DPower about that truck!

Shameless, glad to hear you dont have to load up and move all the stuff, and you can stay where you are settled in at, winning a battle like you have makes your dwellings that much more special and you get to look for another tractor. Double win for you, with your winning (was gonna say streak but who knows where that would go) we'll say record you just might pick the winning numbers for Friday's big drawing. Good Luck and Congratulations
