In the spirit of black Friday how do you prefer to buy a tractor?
From dealer off the farm online or consignment auction estate auction |

Off the farm or at a consignment auction. The downside to the auction is that you don't get the thoroughly examine the tractor before buying. A dealer is going to add in their profit unless it is one they badly want to move.

I like buying off a farm. The simple private sale where you get to chat with the owner. I can't afford a new tractor which has something to do with it but I also like the older simpler tractors. And I love to know the story behind the machine. To me the stories are worth something not sure why when they are not my stories but they still to mean something to me.

I don't like consignment auctions unless something is dirt cheap or I know where it came from. It is notorious for farmers and dealers to dump problem tractors at consignment auctions. Also, more times than not, you are bidding against the owner of the tractor.
Years ago, I was really good friends with the manager of the local JD dealer. Anything he would get in on trade, he would let me have for what he had in it. Said the owner told him they were in the business to sell new tractors and didn't want a bunch of used stuff hanging around. I bought several tractors and turned around and sold them for a profit. Be aware also of the "new loader" installed to move a tractor that they could not give away off the lot. Seems common up to 100hp and some have a loader worth more than the tractor it seems.
Just did a later model year 185 on Auction Time and so far quite happy as it came home for half or less than what most listed on dealers web sites. Private sale, face to face is always best as you can chat about the history/previous rebuild/major repairs, plus operate it . . . . |

I don't know if it's how I like to buy them but the last five or so have been "broken". I guess I do like that if the price is right...at least if I fix it I know what I have.

There are 3 ways to do job GOOD, FAST, CHEAP. YOU MAY CHOOSE 2. If its FAST & CHEAP it won't be GOOD, if it's GOOD & CHEAP it won't be FAST, and if its GOOD & FAST it won't be CHEAP!!!!

I like private sellers right off the farm. Since today is Black Friday i could not pass up a chance to buy a nice but cheap 7060.

I prefer to buy from a dealer, and I think right now those dealers would like to move some iron. But I also had a good experience with Auctiontime - got a good tractor on that site, but not without talking to the owner about the tractor first.
I would avoid Big Iron. Got severely burned on that site. The dishonest seller even had a video of the tractor he was selling, and I bought it. However, when I drove across the State to pick it up, the WD-45 wouldn't even steer, let alone start. And the tires were bad, etc, etc. Ended up losing over $1600 on the tractor when I finally got it all fixed and ready to sell. ... Not everyone who has something to sell will tell you the truth, so deal with someone you trust, if at all possible! Terry

That is why you decide what you are willing to pay before you get to the auction and when the bidding exceeds what you are willing to pay you stop bidding. |

Terry...get ahold of big iron, and voice your complaint. if the tractor wasn't advertised truthfully it is the fault of the dude/dudette that was representing big iron. they are supposed to make observations and describe the items over the word of the seller if there are any flaws with the item. big iron don't like misreps any more than you or anyone else does either, makes for bad advertising!
