My neighbor lost his cousin and farming partner last week in a terrible accident. His name was Pat and a great guy and friend especialy to the young farmers who loved to talk to him. He was 63 but looked much younger. He was starting his 185 allis from the ground, I know what you're thinking, and it was in gear and ran him over. It happened in the early afternoon and my nephew and brother found him about 9:30 that night. This tractor had a faulty starter and he would hit the starter with a hitch pin while reaching around to the key. How many times have farmers done that! For what ever reason the tractor was in 3rd high. It hit the grain drill parked in the shed in front of it the same time the rear tire got on his upper back and left shoulder and it stalled. That's the way they found him. He was going to combine that afternoon but decided to wait another day. I wish he hadn't. We are sure going to miss him. Guys, don't let "things " get in the way of knowing that you know that you know!!! thiings are safe. He just was saying a while back that the last few years were the best he could remember on the farm and wished he was a young guy again. BE CAREFUL! Nick

Sad to hear, condolences to family and friends.
This is the time of year to be EXTRA careful but be careful ALL the time. Since I have Lena going, I have forced myself into the habit of locking the clutch down before I try to start her. I always check for neutral, but Lena has an electric starter and it is set up the way Bill Long remembers the first WC's with starters. A push button on the starter, so you have to stand in front of the right rear wheel to use it. |

Sorry to hear this Nick. My heart goes out to you and your neighbor. Condolences to your neighbor and prayers go out. This is especially a bad time of year for accidents. Everyone is trying to hurry and beat the weather or what ever. Yes, BE CAREFUL!! Use the brain that God gave you. Don't take shortcuts!

Thanks Ted. What is ironic is Pat got stuck in corn in his grain bin last year while loading out grain and Mark heard him yell and shut the auger off. He was shoulder deep in the grain. They got him out by putting a plastic barrel tube over/around him and vacuuming the corn out. We all figured that was his near brush with death. He ended up suffocating in a different way. Too sad.

Thanks guys for the kind words. I will pass them along to Pat's family. We have been running beans today. Pretty decent- 60 to 70 bushel. Doubling up on what corn made here. It's tough to see my neighbor out there running by himself. My nephew started running some of my neighbors beans this evening. We're gonna try to get him done. In about 2 weeks we're gonna start on Pat's 400 acres. As of now there will be 7 combines and don't know how many trucks. The farmers around here are like everywhere else I suppose. They'd rather help somebody else than do there own. We found that out 3 years ago when my brother broke his back and we had 1600 acres standing at the time. He's able to farm now and has over 2000 this year. Once again thanks to all. Sincerely yours, Nick

So sorry to hear that. It's so easy to do. I went to start my C this spring. I forgot my son had bush hogged with it a few weeks before. I always take it out of gear and make sure the wheel is chocked when I leave it. I also usually check for neutral before i start it. Just forgot that one time. Stood on the left side, turned on the gas, pulled the choke, reached over the steering tube and pushed the starter rod. Luckily, it didnt start the first roll over like it usually does. Tire still hit me in the right leg when it jumped. It is sooo easy to forget. Prayers for the family and for everyone else to be careful. Take the extra time, or you might not have any left. |

I didn't do it! It was a short, fat, tall, skinny guy that looked like me!

Yes, I almost had that happen to me. Was starting a WD thinking it was out of gear and it wasn't. I was lucky and quick enough to punch it out of gear. Ladies Gentlemen: DO BE CAREFUL OUT THERE. We do not have an unlimited supply of Allis Chalmers enthusiasts. Good Luck! Bill Long |

If you really think about it, there are no accidents. The circumstances and their outcome are because not doing what is required safely. I made it through a very close call with a tractor running over my legs when I was a senior in high school. Won't ever forget that feeling. Prayers for the family. God Bless, Tracy Martin

We ran Pat's crops this weekend. Ran 200 acres corn Fri. with 3 8 row heads. Ran 240 acres beans Sat. with 4 combines, 2 25' heads and 2 30'. Had a lot of farmers show up with trucks and grain carts. My brother, nephew and I had 1 combine, a grain cart and 1 semi. Owensboro Grain was taking the beans in on free DP. Kept the corn and some of the beans on the farm. His wife Linda couldn't believe how fast it went. Some of the farmers that helped were the same ones that helped 25 years ago when Pat's Dad died on the same farm in a tractor roll-over. She plans to sell all the old allis tractors. I will let you know later. Thanks, Nick

Great kindness and generosity shown by you and the neighbors --- reading your post, I found it kind of freaky that both Pat and his father died in tractor accidents.
