Well I have been planning to add rebar grousers to my old girl for the last few weeks, I have access to some rusted/rusty 5/8" and some 3/4" but would need to buy around 10 sticks of 3/4 to do it the way I feel it needs. Got the shocker when I priced steel, less than a full ton it sells per stick at $41 each, $390/ton I get more than bargained for where I have plenty of leftover but I still have to cut 148 pieces to set to the shoes(two each) which may or may not work well but will be better than what I have not of right now.
Just got a bid from Dura Tuff, SLC UT, $590 for 148 15" precut 1 1/16" tall Rockwell hardened designed for this use 5/8" width at top #6G grousers with $130 freight to get them here. They are really tall at over 1" but are formed with a welding channel on both lower edges and are grousers not re-rod, I am so CONFUSED now. |

I used rebar on my HD5G track and welded 2 bars onto each pad, I used 7024 drag rod with a Miller 180A -AC welder . For a dozer I would look at the pre-formed grouser bar instead , then depending on use of machine of how much height you do need . On the HD5B I welded 5/8 rebar on top of the single grouser using E70S .035 wire and Argon/CO2 shield gas . In neither case did I preheat pad or bar. The question comes up what are you going to use the machine for and how much are you going to use it? I went down to one scrap yard and seen they had a lot of rebar cut offs of the size I needed and in lengths of about 3 ft each , so loaded up what i figured I would need for doing track job - when I scaled out they wanted TWICE the price I could buy new material for from a steel supply for contractors . More than 10 years ago I went to the rebar place and ordered 5/8" weldable rebar that I welded onto my Cat 931 wide pad machine. They are still very good after this passage of time. I hadn't heard of weldable rebar 'til they said that's what I should have. Buying them pre-cut was very reasonable. I ran the idea by the salesman at the undercarriage place and he poo-pooed the idea right away saying they wouldn't last. No money in it for him...LOL.

Thanks guys, Orin I had priced out KK series bar from Crown, $1000 including freight for 20 10' length, no precuts. I have like said some rebar so I may just go that route and add to as needed, was just considering would be like new rails with actual grouser bars and the donors' chains.

Laying in the rebar there is almost an natural V where bar meets the pad. After jacking up the truck frame to clear the ground, I used a channel lock clamp on ends of rebar to hold to pad then tack welded each end on one side . So each pad on front idler and back sprocket was in position to weld. Welded on then used come-along to roll track to next set of pads.
