Yes, I have heard that the "toy commitee" has made the decision to make a 5000 series tractor for the 2012 show, I do not know if it has been decided which one yet?

I feel bad for the people that spent many hours getting a CA and grain drill ready for Spec Cast to come and measure it up and take pictures of. their was a lot of time wasted with that.
Unless your are the lead horse the scenery never changes!!

I agree with the top two posts. The toy committe and the voting was a joke. Why did they ever have models picked to vote on it they knew they werent gonna make that model? I believe one of the toy committe members needs to post some answers. I think the voted on model wasnt what a few of the members wanted made so they just made there own decision.

It is my understanding that there will be three tractors for the next year.

It was my grain drill that Spec Cast came to measure for the toy.....they came the buisiest time of the year for me and I had to come up with four hours of time when four minutes were hard to come by.  The graindrill was an after thought, the CA was the toy that all of the online A-C enthusiests voted for, it was announced that it would be the toy for next year's show.  Now I have been informed that they are going to making a completely other tractor.  I was told that the club toy has been a tradition of making a toy that hadnt been made before....well that chain has already been broke by the RC.  Scale Models built a RC already, there were CAs made before as well but we would have had the first good one.  I really dont care about the grain drill being built or not and have said that in the past, but the CA was voted for therefore the CA toy should be built, not a rebadged Fiat tractor.....

As a club member I want to see a public explanation on whats going on here.  I could contact ceratain people but I want this to be explained to the public.

As for my time on getting the drill ready, I will be requesting compensation from the Upper Midwest Club and like Luke I will not be purchasing this years toy.

The first nail in the coffin was electing the present Upper Midwest Club board. Club members are not allowed opposing views. It's the board's way or NO WAY.

This issue of what toy to make was discussed at length at the fall banquet.  If my memory serves me right I believe the estimate for the CA with the grain drill was somewhere in the $150-$160 range, it was the opinion of those in attendance that would be a hard sell to sell all of them that were required to break even.  Many options were discussed and it was decided to produce the 5000 series tractors instead.  I don't believe that one person or the treasure made this decision alone.

As I had stated the grain drill was an after thought.  Forget about the grain drill, minus the drill the CA toy would have been at a similar price as previous models.  I believe that the club has a good lineup of board members.  Sure its the board's way, but us as members are allowed our opinion and we are allowed to know whats going on.  I dont believe I should have wasted my time and money and without even a thank you.

I am excited about the shows new location and have been a supporter of the show for the past 10+ years and hope to continue.  But I believe some matters need to be discussed and reworked so we dont have such instances again.

Jim

I'm sorry to hear so many people getting bent of shape because of the toy selection. It was talk about at the fall banquet and was left up to the toy committee to make the decision based on cost and being able to sell the toys. From the information I have the ca and grain drill will become a very expensive toy. The club only has so much money to spend on the mold. With the 5000 series we can use the same mold for 3 tractors with minor mold modifications. We also try to make a toy that has not been built before. I'm also sorry to hear that Jim thought he wasted time For them to get measurements.              As far as people criticizing the board of directors we are elected at the spring meeting so if you would like to be part of the decision making process summit your name so you can be considered for election.

There was a very extensive discussion of this at the fall banquet.  A lot of people commented and voiced their opinions on the matter.  I do not believe a decision has been made yet; I thought their timeline called for something to be decided after the 1st of the year.  The decision of the toy committee has always been in the best interest in the Orange Spectacular show and the Upper Midwest AC Collectors Club in general and I believe this time it will be no different, no matter what the final decision is/will be.  The guys on the committe have one of the toughest jobs in the club, putting at risk the financial stability of the show and club every year they outlay thousands of dollars making these toys.  Their past successes are duly noted by anyone who has searched Ebay for one of these toys and their prices just keep going up every year older they get.  The criticism of the board of directors I believe is unwaranted as well.  These guys put in 100's of hour every year in dedicated service to the membership and the show.  The Orange Spectacular doesn't just form out of thin air; there are many volunteers, vendors, exhibitors, etc, etc that make the show possible.  There is no doubt that all those people make the show what it has become, both club members and non members alike, but behind the scenes are 10 guys who put it tons of time and effort making decisions and putting together ideas that make the show go off without issue year in and year out.  I have been to the last 2 spring meetings (when the board members are elected) and to the last 3 fall banquets where club issues are discussed as well, and for the most part those 8-10 guys listen to dissent and respond with clear answers as to why decisions were made they way they were and resolve issues the members have just as it is their position to do so being duly elected.  I have not purchased a show toy to date, but I will this year just to show my support to the club and to the men (and women) who spend a great deal of time every year to keep the club growing and prospering.

I agree with Brad 110% and would only ad that it was my understanding (so I can be corrected if I'm wrong) that the toy vote was just for ideas to be submitted to Spec-cast to find out what it would cost to make them, and after getting a price it would be up to the toy committee to make the final decision, taking into consideration what's best for the club.

It's a shame that things like this get blown out of proportion.  I will also say that there were over 100 members at the Fall Banquet when this was discussed and voted on and if I remember right all were in favor of letting the toy committee making the final decision and that there were none opposed.

I'm only commenting on why the choice of the 5000 series tractor was made, not how the decision was made, I don't have a dog in that fight. It's probably just me, but I think the 5000 series tractor is not a a legacy AC model that will have much interest among model tractor collectors for one year, let alone three consecutive years. If the 5000 series tractor is the choice, I suspect model tractor buyers will be staying away in droves this year.

As a big toy/model buyer/builder I think our right about that. The 5000's is or was not a big hit IMO. I wish they would do some D17's all series they did some years back. I wish they had all the series 17's  narow and wide frount. Also put some 417 loaders on them. I think they would do really good because there is alot of 17's out there. Eric

I have not ordered a resin toy before because I don't care for Resin toys.   Not sure if this would be a resin toy but I wouldn't order an IB but I would if it had a drill as I like implements.  Sorry, carpel tunnel surgery recently so hard to type and think.  I like the 5000 series but wouldn't order a resin one.

Since it is a new design (no 5000 series AC's been done before) I would bet it is resin. A new set of dies for resin is approx $11,000 to $13,000 right now. A new set of dies for diecast metal is around $80,000 to over $100,000. These prices are from Spec-Cast.

This may be why this toy committee is leaning towards the 5050. You could reuse the dies for the other 5000 series models. Dies for CA, UC, or T16 models would only be good for the one model.
