Anyone have or use one of those small toe-behind backhoe ? How well do they work ?

I have never used one... at work we had a 3 point hitch hoe on a 50 HP CASE farm tractor.. they guys use to tear the crap out of it.. Light duty only........ The son has a CASE 530 backhoe which is about the size of a D15 INDUSTRIAL unit with a loader and hoe. It weights about 8000 pounds... You can power down on the hoe and lift the back tires off the ground.....
If your going to use the tow hoe to do small jobs / putting a water line in regular dirt or sand , it might be OK.... If your in clay or gumbo, your going to have problems. I would not plan on a lot of "power down" to dig... more roll the bucket and PULL toward you.

I have a neighbor that built one. It works quite well. I would say he can dig similar to a subcompact tractor with a backhoe. The only minus is mobility.

Got to put a few hours on a small tractor loader/ backhoe my neighbor rented, probably about the same size. You just have to work within the limitations due its limited size and weight. Made quick work of a small job I had but I used both ends.
It was a little tricky to move the tractor on this little Massey unit because the wheels were locked out when you had the seat turned to the backhoe end (or so it seemed). For a rental unit the mini excavators are the berries.

I have a gopher, I think that's the name, ex power company unit, made in west by gawd virginny, has powered lockable powered 14" wheels, and is powered by a k'boter engine. not bad, considering I paid 3k for it, and its sturdier than the HF one!

I have a Long 3 point hoe. I used it on my D14 to clean out part of my pond. I was bringing up a lot of blue clay. I could use it to move the tractor forward to continue digging. It worked okay but the 14 could not lift it. It is extremely heavy. I got a D17 to use it on and maybe it could lift it. I haven't tried it yet, I'm retired so I don't get to projects too fast. I don't know if it's nationwide, but around these parts Long is a good name for equipment.

i serirously looked at the HF type unit , up here , about $5000 Canucks ( +13% taxes). decided I could rent a miniex LOTS of times when I needed it. eventually bought the BX23S and while it only digs 6' deep, that's fine by me. when you rent up here, it's by the day (24hrs) NOT runtime, so plan as many jobs you can get done within that 24 hours ! just don't run for 4-5 hrs and call it a day...get your money's worth !!
