305 pto 252 drawbar hp
4w-305 is basically the same with some improvents, different cab and sheetmetal, different drivelines to rear.
both use 731 CU 6cyl motor. basically a destroked 844 from the construction/crawler line.
very heavy loads and abuse can hurt drop boxes causing expensive repairs or worse... junk.
i have worked on drop boxes for minor issues like cracked tooth on a gear and a gear siezed to output shaft just after dad purchased. otherwise we have used 2 for 12+ years without major incident. overhauled one when we bought it, still going strong. unless damage is on input shaft or counter shaft, drop box work can be performed in tractor. parts are getting harder to find though.
what else do you want to know? Edited by CAL(KS) - 06 Jul 2012 at 11:52am |

can you just not get the input or counter shafts anymore? how much are engine kits for one? and an older gentlemen from this area had told me that the allis trans that are in the 8550 and 4w305 are the same as the versatile of those years is that true?

I know Steiger used some Allis-Chalmers transmissions. I think it was the transmissions Allis built for the 8550 and 305.

yes i think some steiger applications used the allis transmissions, which ones i dont know, however the gears are different (# of teeth) and cannot be used in 8550, and i suppose 305 applications. found this out searching for parts
well some parts are available but most are salvage. mostly gears are the problem not the shafts. trouble with input shaft/gear and counter shaft/gear, you have to pull cab and dropbox to work on. high/low range gears and output shaft can be replaced while in machine.
i was thinking an inframe was around 2000-2500 but that was a while back
head work is pricy because 4 valves per cylinder
dont know much about the front ends, we have never touched ours.
rear end is same as 2wd tractor (like 7080) with heavier axles and planetaries
i say we but the tractors belong to my father, i have done plenty of operating and service work Edited by CAL(KS) - 06 Jul 2012 at 4:08pm |
