I just drained the oil out of the front axle and final drives on our 8030 and was reading in the manual about replacement oil. The manual lists SAE EP90 for oil. First question, I assume 80w90 GL-5 is an acceptable substitute?
In my pick-up truck I know it calls for a friction modifier in the limited slip rear diff. This got me thinking about the front axle in the tractor, assuming I have a limited slip front axle, does it need a friction modifier?
Regardless of the answer to question #2 how do I know if I have a limited slip front axle? According to a sales brochure they were optional but the operator manual says nothing about them. The axle tag has four lines of info but none of them seem to be in English.

80W-90 is fine.....myself, I'd use 75W-140 synthetic.....friction modifier not needed but will not hurt.....yours is a locker style differential, not a clutch disc style like a pickup truck.

Dr, any particular reason you prefer the 75w-140 synthetic?
Are you saying all 8000 series fwa axles are limited slip? I f not how do I tell by the tag numbers?

I prefer 75W-140 synthetic because it's better....it performs better in extreme cold and hot temps. No.......more 8000 series aren't locker type differentials....they are standard diffs........the axle tag has something that identifys it is or isn't.....with engine off jack up one front wheel and see if you can rotate it both directions without locking.

The tag on the FWA axle has a model number and a serial number.If the axle has the "No Spin" feature,there will be an "N" stamped behind one of those numbers.I don't remember which one at the moment.

Tipo SCE 5183.2N
R. Tr. i 17.12
Serie 10-83
N° M__r. 001226
I am a little fuzzy on the last line where I have two blanks because there is a big scratch in the tag but the top three lines are accurate.

Lynn, thanks for the info. Now I know I have a limited slip/no spin axle. What language is that tag in? I fogot where AC purchased the axles from.
