My wd45 has a petronix electronic ignition in it. I'm not getting any spark. Tractor has sat for about a year. I used the 200 amp engine boost on my battery charger to try to jump start it. Could I have damaged the ignition module? Thanks, Joe

My guess is you let the magic smoke out, even if you didn't see it. You'll have to wait on Steve,B&B for a more definitive answer unless someone else knows for sure. HTH

Yours may have "magically" stopped working like I have heard many say. Have you made sure there is power to distributer? Could be something very simple.
There has been a big debate before on pertronix ignition. I at one time was going to install one on my tractor and truck that is still points until I seen on a truck forum I frequent about them "magically" not working anymore. Now I am against them for the price they are. |

Like Bob said !!!!
![]() I installed Pertronix units on 15 Clark C-500 fork lifts and learned the hard way not to high amp boost start them. When you call Steve for a new unit get a new coil that matches the unit. Be glad it's just a two hundred lesson on your tractor and not the units on your new pickup or car their way over that to replace them. Just remember speed kills so charge it slow.

Sadly, the magic smoke is all gone.....
What's even sadder is that for less than 50 cents, Pertronix could make the units 'bullit proof' to jump starting, using boosters, etc.
I used to design remote energy control systems(think of 15 miles of solid copper point A to B,exposed to Mother Nature and I NEVER had any of my equipment lose the 'smoke'.

Joe, That's a VERY good posibility that you spiked the E.I. module, and it works no more. I just posted a couple weeks back about Battery chargers and Boosters on E.I. equipped Tractors. Always disconnect the Battery from the Tractor when charging or hitting the "boost" mode to spin the engine over. Even if you just remove one cable (doesn't matter which) before you hook up your charger, you'll be doing yourself a favor. Aside of what Blake has read, we've sold a lot of E.I. units over the years, and I can count on one hand how many actually failed because of the unit itself. If it was the unit, Pertronix would either repair or replace the unit free of charge within its warranty. Can't ask for more than that. Blake wouldn't know if someone installed it incorrectly or did the same thing you did. Most folks won't admit to making a mistake, its easier to make the complaint. Most of our customer's failures was because of exactly what happened to you. Folks forget about the unit, hook a charger to the Battery and let r' rip. The E.I. in my 6V Model B is now going on 11 years old. The ole' girl still fires right off when I'm ready to put her ta' work. My 12V version IB's E.I. is going on 4 years old now. We have a lot of our Orange family members here running E.I.'s with great sucess over the years, and have them in multiple Tractors. People shouldn't condemn somethin' they never tried. Check your connections first just in case to make sure the wiring system is okay and no wires are broken in your Ignition circuit. Could be somethin' as simple as that. Always do the easy stuff first. You'll be a bit surprised that usually its the simple or stupid stuff that happens winds up being the culprit. We have the E.I.'s in stock if your interested in replacing the unit. They run $105.+ the ride.... |

Take the petronix out and throw it in the trash can then put in a good set of points. Next go buy a MSD and you will never have to buy another set of points and you will have a REAL electronic ing. MACK |

Test the lead to the coil from the switch for voltage; have seen the switches fail and/or the lead ground out. You should have battery voltage with the switch on and no voltage with it off. If you have battery voltage, then the EI module is probably fried. Have heard from several folks that Petronix is very good about about replacing the modules if they are bad.I have the Petronix units on 5 of my Allis's and am real happy with them (and use the standard 12V internal resisted coils). I did talk with Steve 1st and learned about battery charging thing and disconnect them before charging. They are as close to "bullet proof" as one can get...no condenser failures, no points being fried, and no adjustments needed.Have had (bad) experience with obtaining "good "quality points/condensers and am of the opinion that the Chinese don't know how to make them to last more than a few months; too bad they are not what they were 50 years ago or I would still be using them.

Oh me I don't want to get into this debate again...lol.. I was all for the pertronix b/c I wanted it for my 73 F100 but.....the Ford Truck forum I frequent alot had alot of people say they were left stranded on the side of the road with the pertronix. This is the biggest reason really why I won't get it.
Others have had great results and I am happy for them. I never directly told anybody not to use it before b/c of the negativity I have heard. I wish all with pertronix to keep having good luck. |

If you do a do-over, put a 15 volt zener diode across the Pertronix input and fuse the ignition circuit.
