Horse drawn tater digger at auction

I bought an IH horse drawn potato digger last year for $175 including the front truck. According to a 1934 piece of literature I have, this machine was made as a Model No 4, No.5, No 5A, No 6, No 7 and No 9. 4,5, 5A were 6' 2-horse units, others were 7' 4-horse rigs. No 4 was a riddle type; all others rod-link type. Options included shaker and vine turner, extension elevator, road rings, coulter attachments, roller type tongue truck, continuous apron attachment, stone trap and special hitches for tractors such as the F-12 Farmall. A direct connect hitch that eliminated the need for the front truck when pulled by a tractor was also available. Mine seeems fully operational except one wheel is frozen. I'll open it up and take a look before potato digging season later in the year.

I also have a horse drawn potato planter that seemed too dangerous to have the grandkids ride; lots of exposed moving chains, gears. etc. I covered over all the dangereous areas, added a shelf for holding the seed potatoes and a drop tube made of 3" PVC pipe. Now rhe kids ride along and drop the seeds down the tube where the shoe has opened the trench. Hillers cover the seed pieces. We planted 6 300 foot rows in less than an hour this spring. Once the kids get the rhythm, the spacing comes out about right, singing or chanting helps too.

Yea, but it's fun working on & using the old equipment, isn't it?

I paid 200 for mine 3 years ago, was alway shedded, but was missing the front hitch so I fabbed something up to hook to a tractor drawbar. Works great. I plant way too many tators to dig by hand. As it is, it takes me, the wife and kids a good day to harvest them all.

I bought one last year without the front wheels for $150 and I found two more about four miles from me that the guy wanted $100 each for. I was going to buy them, but money has been too tight lately. I think he already got rid of them because the last time that I drove by I didn't see them.

I'd like one of these, too but I'd rather make one to mount under my G. One I wrote to the auctioneer asking for the selling price in MI a couple years ago only brought $125.

How much do those usually go for?

Man I've been wanting one of those. Salines a long way to go to see it get run up way more than I would pay. But I still want one.
