Well my search for a cab tractor is over. I'm sorry that it is not an AC but it isn't a MF. We got a really good price on it and think it will pay for itself in no time. It is our first cab tractor and our first FWA tractor and so far they both seem EXTREMELY nice.
Now for what it is. 1997 John Deere 5500

At least the light switch and turn signal switch are the same as those on my 6080! New rear tires after 1200 hours???

I think these tractors closely resemble the 6000 series AC's. Just look at the cab shape itself... maybe this is some doin's of the AC engineers who went to the 'other side' after AC shut down? -Wes

Hope they got the bugs out in those hours. My brother bought a new 5000 series with a loader a few years ago and spent the better part of a year and a half getting things to work right. Most trouble was linkage to the hydraulic controls.

My brother has the 6400 series and has put about as much into it in repairs as it cost new.....but does have around 14,000 hours on it. I bought some equipment from a guy last year that had a 5400 w/loader just like this. It was very light in the rear end...he went to load a hay crimper and the rear end came right off the ground. Better check to see if the rears are loaded.

My friend has a 5400 series, and it is so light in the rear thatI am afraid of using it on anything other than flat ground. He has no weights or fluid in the rear and it bounces like a basketball. I have seen him pick the rear up while loading manure. My AC175 seems like twice the tractor as far as handling the loader.

Didn't really mean for it to come out like that. It has the stock tires on it and they have alot of the tread left. |

I have a 5400 with a 520 loader. It has loaded tires and can easily lift over 3000lbs and the rear end stays solid. In fact I move my CA's around with it. I can pick up a whole CA a put in anywhere I want. I also have a BoDozer grapple for it. Tractor is very easy to maneuver and has good strong hydraulics. With loaded tires and loader it weighs almost 10K. Bucket work is fantastic. With a full bucket of stone or wet dirt you can't even tell there is anything in the bucket. Its been a flawless deal for me so far 4 yrs. But mine is a 95 made in USA before they started making them over seas. Maybe the older ones are heavier built.

There's several of the 5000 series around here. They've had good luck with them but they were built to compete with the lighter tractors that are being produced today. The 6000 series tractors are quite a bit higher in price but there heavier and not quite so short coupled.I think thats one reason your seeing so many of the new tractors that are FWA.The larger front tire helps the ride somewhat.

Nice looking unit!!, I have a smaller fwa tractor with a loader and I use a weight box on the three point and it sure makes a big differance in handling. Just my opinion but I think thpse fa with planitary drive as on the 5500 are better than the drop box setup.

If Allis Chalmers was still in business you could have bought from them. But since they are not, it doesn't matter who's tractor you buy.

Nice looking rig, i think you will love it, only thing i mit do is look into getting a grill guard for the front of that tractor, that loader is close coupled to the tractor and that grill is going to get hit, believe you me i know.
Good luck.

You know, They don't make Allis Chalmer anymore. And from reviewing my AGCO annual statement looks like we are not going to see any more orange either. Sooo what is one to do in this area of technical updated equipment - buy an American made tractor from an American Company. Who? Looks like John Deere fits the bill. Yes, CNH and AGCO are American Based not to mention Kabota and whatever else, but many of their tractors are made overseas. Looks like you are buying an American Product from an American Company. And, it looks like JD is one of the only ones. Others will have to comment on how dependable and efficient it is.
Even though some of the foreign made cars are better and better build that those made in the USA I always have and will continue to by US.
Nice looking tractor with more technicaly updatedl features and power than I ever sold. As much as it hurts one has to go with the times.
Best of luck on your new purchase.
Good Luck!
Bill Long

It does look like a pretty handy unit and I don't fault a guy for buying something that will do the job he wants done. I kinda wonder how much of that tractor is American made.
When I still worked for CAT back in 82, there was a local contractor doing some work in the Mt. Joy plant. There was a small scale CAT track loader on the job for about 2 days when it broke down, not one part of it was made in the USA. After 2 weeks of waiting on parts and then getting the wrong ones, the contractor brought in his John Deere to finish the job. Kinda poked holes in the 24 hour parts guarantee CAT had at the time.

who says John Deere is an American product? My brother works for a rancher that bought two of these FWA Deere tractors with loaders. 105 HP apiece. Every part that we could see was stamped China or Indonesia. they are just assembled in the US.

That tractor is a 97 and would be entirely US made and built like my 95 5400. Sometime in this century all tractors up to 100hp are foreign built as far as I know. Its a bunch of crap! |
