There are questions fairly often about filters. From one that is current what is different about engine oil, hydraulic oil, and fuel filters. I understand full flow and by pass, what other difference really matter.
Back before everything went computer, I remember the big master cataloged of filters Wix, Baldwin and others had. They had generic listings you could start with how fine you wanted to filter it by Microns. The thread pitches and size, and the fiscal size of the filter. I have a AC HD 5 crawler. It had 2 matching canister filters. One engine oil, the other primary fuel filter. ( ![]() So as per the other filter question of today. Someone looking for a hydraulic filter, a dealer only item. Well some comes up with a "WILL FIT" number that is listed as engine oil filter. Other than micron size of filtering agent what would be different?

other than micron size and thread size, and O-ring location..... the only thing to worry about is the pressure rating.... Most filters will be adequate and interchange if the thread size and micron size are OK..... I have done that on some industrial equip..
some filters have an internal BYPASS.. if the filter gets restricted, the valve opens and allows the oil to bypass the filter element so you dont cavitate or backpressure the pump... some do not bypass internally.... engine filters might be on the PRESSURE side and run 20- 60 psi....hydraulic systems run 3000 psi, so MOST of the hydraulic filters are on the SUCTION side of the pump ... or return line of the hydraulics.

I have installed high pressure hydraulic filters a number of times. Never seen any in spin on, canister only, and the filter housing was very substantial.

Correct--- here is GOOGLE
The maximum pressure a typical spin-on oil filter can handle is usually around 150 to 200 PSI (pounds per square inch), depending on the specific filter design and manufacturer; however, it's important to consult the filter's specifications for the exact pressure rating. Key points to remember:

If you dig a little with search engine there are a lot of cross reference charts online
Found the filter for my Moto Guzzi Jackal is same filter used on my Norton Commando and it interchanges to many European cars . Just going through a filter search for my AC 715B TLB- for hydraulic system . Even on that machines engine - they do not list the PH8A filter for Perkins 4-236 but that is what I use . On my HD5 I made up my own base filter plate and now use the PH8A on it as both fuel and oil filter instead of the old cartridge style - which interchanged with 1952 Chrysler 6 cyl engine bypass filter The pressure relief is one setting as is the anti-drain back feature for position filter is mounted in .
