Hi all I was out mowing my pasture. She was humming right along for a good hour, then slowly started losing power. I limped back to the barn, sputtering, jumping, dying. Always re-started. Here is what I've done. Pulled gas line from carb to check flow. Steady, full flow for a minute. Inside of tank is spotless; the inlet shows no obstruction unlike the last time it acted up and I found a ladybug blocking fuel flow..but that's another story! I pulled the carb and thoroughly cleaned it with my carb rods, gumout, air. This is a re-built carb from Yesterday's Tractors, installed 9/18. Re-installed carb. but did not connect the air cleaner hose. Still no good. At one point it had a backfire through the carb, i.e. puff of white smoke before dying. Pulled it again to re-check the needle and seat (Viton tipped) and float action. Didn't help, still sputtered for about ten seconds then died. Throttle and choking action didn't seem to affect it much. FYI: 1953 WD 45 (gas). I converted it to 12V nearly 20 years ago. New coil 5/12; new plugs 5/18 (plug insulators are a nice tan color) replaced ignition points, rotor and cap 6/21. I am at a loss. I believe fuel delivery is not the issue, but maybe I'm wrong. Should I focus on electrical/timing?

Sounds just like what my G was doing. I replaced the condenser and it runs fine.
Found an old one. Happened 2 times now. I did what you did thinking it was fuel starvation. Just a thought. Let us know what you find.

Could also be an induction leak. Is the manifold tight and are the gaskets in good condition?

i would consider the condenser first.... then the ignition coil.... Elect components break down over time with heat.
you have a 12v coil with internal resistor and not the old type with an external resistor ? Edited by steve(ill) - 17 Jun 2023 at 12:46pm |

Did you install Champion spark plugs? They could be your problem.

Sounds like condenser to me as well.RR174 in Echlin brand from NAPA and dr60 in Standard Blue streak. Those are the only two condensers I will use.Everything else seems to be junk these days.

Thanks..I will. I went to Fleet Farm since I know they carry tractor parts including ignition kits. They had 'em for Ford, MF, John Deere, etc., but not for the Allis. I recall I bought a kit there years ago. I too think it's the condenser. We'll see.

Blue streak come highly recommended. I just ordered some from Amazon. Check with a parts house they should have them.

Bingo!! It was the condenser! I rummaged through my old parts and found a condenser, (Made in USA). Installed and instant purring, the way it should be. Thanks for all your help and suggestions.
