New addition to the AC family

   I brought home something I have been casually looking for recently.  No, its not the D17 - most of you have seen it here many times before.  I picked up an AC 800 wagon running gear.  It was originally a forage wagon, but the previous owner removed the box as it was trash and replaced it with this nice platform that he made - definitely something that I can use.  It's a good original gear with most of the factory decals and markings in place.  It also trailed nicely behind the truck at 50 mph.

I do have questions about the model number 800.  Norms book appears to state that running gear model numbers end in 5 (505, 705, etc.).  As this had a (presumably) AC forage box on it, would the 800 denote the model of the forage box?  Norm's book does not seem to mention model numbers for forage wagons either.   I am also trying to pin down an approximate year.  If I am correct, these were produced in Laporte starting in 1964 until they stopped making hay/forage equipment in 1975.  Can anyone provide some feedback about these things?

	It is in fact a model 800 running gear. 10 ton capacity. It’s serial number is a higher number (4482), so I believe it’s approximate age should be closer to 1970-ish? And it’s steering rods are still positioned behind the front frame which also denoted the 1965-1970 era. Sometime in the early-mid 1970s steering rods were positioned “in front” of the front frame. It’s type of extended hitch is another indication of 1970 era. It’s a “dual latch” type mechanism. It’s locking collar(s) has two latches that grab siding pin on both left & right sides. Early types of extended hitches had a single spring loaded pin with a “T” pull up to unlock them. It’s ID tag is “stamped” not raised numbers like a “braille”. The early model’s ID tags were Braille. 	The 800 running gears came into the AC running gear line-up at a later era. They are unique. They have a differently designed rear frame when compared to most others. Their “reach” pipe slides thru a locking collar positioned in the front of their rear frame. That front lock collar is the only attachment of the reach to rear frame. Check this collar for wear & slop. Worn collars allow the whole rear frame to wriggle back & forth thus creating more wear. The rearward end of this same reach pipe also “slides” thru another hole located near the rear hitch end of the rear frame. Note: it slides thru & does not have or offer a second attaching(fixed) point. “Electric Wheel Co” , the Mfg of all AC running gears, decided to smash this extended reach pipe from round to a flat & drill holes thru it to make it a rear hitch(less expensive design?). 	AC7060IL - Thanks, that is great information! I have not had a good look at the rear clamp yet, but the whole unit feels pretty tight. There is no wobbling in the chassis anywhere. The bolt that connects the tongue to the steering assembly might have a little bit of wear, but nothing major. Much better than others I have seen. None of my books had much information about them. I did read about electric wheel making them, but I thought Laporte took over in the mid 60s. - Thanks for the clarification.

	DSeries4, you’re welcome. Congratulations on finding it. It looks like previous owner took good care of it. The AC 800 is also the last of the 6 bolt(lug) wheel configurations for AC gears. In order of their age, here’s the lineage of the AC 6bolt gears; 601,605,700,701,& 800.
