I got it back together and running (kinda) What I did. Pulled the motor for upper and lower (vertical shaft) oil seal replacement. Also replaced the gov shaft seal. I had both coil packs off just to try to get oil soaked trash out of that area. Adjusted the valves, since it has been over 500 hours on them. Reassembled and here is what I got. The thing starts right up. It is very very sluggish and makes an exhaust sound like it is running on one cylinder. Thus far: pulled each plug wire one at a time and got no change in the sound or how it ran. grounded out each plug wire and got bright blue spark. I don't know where to start throwing stuff at it. I will be in the city tomorrow and will get a set of plugs, but have no faith in that making a diff. Am gonna throw the plugs at it and yank the valve covers. No heat out there so it will be after this winter blow before I can spend much time on it. I am open to any and all ideas

If you got a bright blue spark off the old plugs, plugs, wires and coil packs aren't the problem. Possibly a timing thing or as mentioned the gov thing.

Back to youtube vids, I guess! Check that you put everything back in its right place? I generally take pics before and while I am removing things. I know its 20/20 hindsight, but I've done things wrong on re-assembly before, too! Good luck!

the valves were generally around 8. I reset them to 6/.oo6. the book says five but have been running 6 for years. I did not take the gov shaft out. did the seal like in a you tube that was recommended.

is there an ARM the bolts to the shaft outboard of the seal ? A few degrees off can cause problems ?

How old is the gas in the tank? New gas and drain the carb float bowl to be sure water is not the issue. other than that it sure sounds like a governor issue.

Does it have pushrods for the valves? Check they aren't bent or a rocker arm is in the correct position. Might check the valves to make sure one isn't stuck.

Well Steve you get the prize. After going thru all thoughts, i came to the "thought" that it was a gov problem. Yep the gov and throttle linkage are behind a mounting plate. So i took it all down in the rear again and noticed that the gov arm was real stiff. WTF, by the time i got it all apart something happened and the gov arm was loose like sposed to be. I started it this am and it ran like a new one. Who knows but what the hay, it is over. Thanks all for the input.
