I stopped in to a friend of mine that runs 3 GM products (2 Chevy Taho's and a Denali). These are '05-06 model year V-8's (vortex was on the top cover). He was swapping out batteries from one buggy to another as one will be on the market soon, but my point is , I COULD SEE THE PLUGS AND COIL PACKS !!!!! WTF was/is FORD thinking (I run one Confused) with their "hidden" plugs ???

Are complaining about Ford, or Gooberment Motors?
I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science.

them fancy 300K 4n sports cars hide the entire ENGINE under a sheet of 'plastic'.....
so 'detroit' is following  them ??
ever since 'computers' got cheap, 'they' keep finding ways to make cars even cheaper to build.
little things ,like get rid of the distributor, plug wires, couple of gears, two handfuls of mechanical parts chops a lot of weight and  'finicky' parts to make, ship, store, install, etc. A 10 cent computer replaces it all, weighs all of 2 feathers..... increase profit margins, not MPGs....

I had a 2001 and 2002 F150 with the 5.4 motor.... I will admit the plugs are harder to get to than my 2013 Turbo Ecoboost.  I changed the plugs in it in 45 minutes... That being said, the 5.4 motor  takes about twice as long.. Coils are not difficult to get to..  Plugs are recessed in the head and the back one on each side is a slight challenge, but not what i would call difficult. ......... that motor has been out of production since 2010.
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

Odd in that the Local Garages bemoan GMs and state OPENLY Fords just are not that bad to end up in their shops.  Check the lots around the garages around the area and nearly all have 3-1 GMs to any other make.

At least Ford didn’t go begging hat in hand to the Federal Gooferment wanting their sorry asses bailed out.
I for one, will never forgive them for that. GM is dead to me.

I had too many engine and transmission problems with Chevy in the 1975- 1985 era... Switched to FORD and never looked back.  I do all my own small general maintenace. Never been to a dealer or private shop.. Never needed any major work.

When I was turning wrenches for a living, repairing Ford trucks was some of the easiest money you could make (unless doing heavy engine work). Ford cars on the other hand seemed to be that there was a simple way to do things or the Ford way to do things.

My 2000 Tundra had the coil pack on the top of the plug.  There was a long tube the went down to the plug.  the plugs were a little difficult to start but with a piece of 1/4' hose it wasn't too difficult.  The only one that was sorta difficult was the one behind the master cylinder.  If I had longer legs, I could have changed them in half an hour.  Probably two hour stopping and talking and drinking something!

SO your who point was dont buy a FORD because it takes 90 minutes to change out a set of coils and plugs once every 100,000 miles ?   I think i got more important problems to worry about !... Like ENGINE, TRANSMISSION, BODY RUST  Wink

Loosing 50 pounds of BEER GUT would help a bunch on getting to those plugs!  Clap

Where did I infer that Steve ?? The BEETS rumbling in your tummy tonight ??
If I lost 50 #'s, I'd only weigh 154 #'s at 54 years old Wink !! Ford should have never buried a simple part is my point Smile !!

I for one, will never forgive them for that. GM is dead to me.

GM's "bankruptcy" on loans from the federal government was only a small fraction of how GM stiffed the taxpayers.
Locally, the Massena NY GM plant  operated from the late 50's until 2009. GM closed the plant, laid off, or transferred all the employees and dumped the Superfund cleanup of the PCB contaminated plant in the lap of the EPA. GM paid about $121 million of the $500 million price tag. You and I paid the rest. That is in addition to the loans that were forgiven.
I won't buy a GM product either !

Just replaced brakes on a 2010 Impala I bought New.  Took me just under two hours all four wheels where the first round of this at 80K was with a torch a breaker bar and a pipe cheater to bust the severe level of loctite loose taking FOUR Hours where a 1/2" impact wrench was doing NOTHING, bolts had been dipped to bottom of heads in Yellow(SEIZE it Forever) Loctite.  This time was not as bad HOWEVER the Fords I have had did NOT require brakes due to the same reason IE: severely warped rotors and generally within 40k miles dragged out to at most 80k, car now has 156k on it.  Pads have NEVER been more than 50% worn.  Car has been a Money Pit for small stuff, switches, trim pieces, exterior trim retainers, seats falling apart and I hear the same of the light trucks line.  BTW Rust has begun to take it too where it has been washed EVERY Month of its life.

For me, the 'deal' with coil packs,ALL brands,  is that NONE of them should FAIL !!!

All those who have 30-40-50 year old mowers STILL running, raise your hands ! Yup, ther's a LOT of us, right !!

prop plane engines very, very seldom have mags fail......

cynically say I, the main reason auto coils fail.... to make MONEY !!

Better termed, "Planned Obsolescence", NOTHING designed to last more than a few years, degrades rapidly at that level where after nine years and new model changes the old stuff becomes second rate aftermarket only as OEM Supplies dry up.  Been on that Bronco Ride since 1975.  GM had held out the longest but now as time and management wears on, the days of consistently being able to purchase OEM for 20-40 year machines is coming to a close, Crate Engines are on a Short List to appease EPA.
