My D17 IV diesel oil pressure gauge always is maxed out. When the engine is turned off, the gauge goes down to zero. Is this an issue with the gauge or could the pressure be too high? I've known low pressure is not good, but is high pressure bad? My D17 gas oil pressure gauge runs at about 3/4 of the way up in normal. Just wondering if I have a problem. Dave

High pressure could mean that something is plugged or it could mean a bad gauge. Try a different gauge. If the gauge appears to be good, try another oil filter. If that doesn't fix it I'd pull the valve cover and see if oil is getting to the top of the engine.

the oil pressure regulating valve is set at 35 psi.

the d-17 diesel engine has more oil pressure than the gas engine. it needs a special gauge for that pressure. call Mark at 440-570-3653 for the gauge, made in the USA.

Norm is right. Gas gauge is 0-30 psi. Diesel is 0-60 psi (possibly 0-80 psi)

The 262 always run good pressure. If it don't then you have a problem. MACK

The concerned poster doesn't specify which gas D-17 he has either. Prior to full flow oiling system had fair oil pressure on a good day. Any series 4 gasser I've been around usually has the gauge pegged until you idle it down hot.

The gas D17 I have is also a series IV. Kind of sounds like I might have the wrong gauge. I have changed oil and filter. Guess I need to get it over to repair man and see if he can test the pressure for me. Thanks for the input. Dave

The spec for oil pressure is 35 psi. Check what yours is with a gauge with numbers. There is a pressure regulator on the left side of the block near the front. The outflow of the regulator oils the cam and injection pump gears. Having the pressure set too high can starve the gears for oil. On a hot engine, run it at full speed and adjust it down to 35 psi if it's higher.
This is on the diesel BTW.... Edited by Brian Jasper co. Ia - 22 Mar 2019 at 5:28pm |
