I thought that was the way they were spose to look on those youngster's cars. Seems that if you turn the key and drop it in gear and it moves, turn up the tunes and hit the road.
![]() Last time I was at my daughter's house, I pulled the dipstick on her RAV4 that the oldest grandson beats down the road. It had been driven 4000 miles with the service engine light on. Dipstick looked just like that. Oh yeah, and the antifreeze reservoir was empty. |

Maybe he needs a dipstick stretcher?
Some of those youngsters' cars are great, they will get at least 20,000 miles before having to have an oil change (replacement). Hey, we can't expect too much out of kids that eat Tide Pods.

I still change the oil in my daughters cars even though they are 30 and 27 years old. Last time I had a come to Jesus meeting with them as one had about two quarts left in it and the other was just touching the tip of the dip stick. I suspect they will check it more often now.

Oh boy...I'd say something, but everyone else's replies sum up what I'm thinking.
I had a teacher in high school whose son didn't check the oil in his early 2000s model F-150. Blew the motor. A new motor was his graduation present. That was a few years ago...I think he checks his oil now. Shoot...talking about the girls not checking their oil, that's true with a lot in my generation, but Mom said her dad trained her to check it regularly and always keep a quart of oil in the car in case it was needed. Dads need to preach this a little more these days I think. Of course, kids are also probably different now than they were back then.

3 of us guys stopped along the autobahn outside Mannheim Germany. A drop dead beautiful blond was stopped beside the road with her VW. Yep it was locked up. She had no idea where the motor was located. She had run it somewhere near 30000 miles without looking at anything except the inside of the windshield. We dropped her off at the VW dealer in Mannheim and wished her some good luck.

A guy I worked with back in the day inherited a car from his uncle. Rick knew it used oil . Rick let his wife drive and use it with instructions to check the oil every time she filled it with gas . Even showed her how to pop the hood and made her pull the dip stick out so he knew she could keep track of it .He kept a couple quarts of oil in the trunk and showed her where to add if needed. A couple of months went by and Rick went to change the oil. The oil he left in the trunk was still there and no oil on the dip stick. Debbie he yelled, Have you checked the oil like we talked about. No she yelled back , you said to check it when I fill it with gas .I only put 5 dollars in at a time. I never fill the gas tank.

One person I had talked to had a John Deere 314 lawn mower with a Kohler that he usually kept track of all the maintenance on. That included checking the oil most every time he mowed with it. He told his wife to do that also, and to add some if it was low. One time he was out farming, and she decided to go and mow the yard, and so after checking the oil, added some. When he came back, she told him how it smoked terribly, and wouldn’t hardly run. He asked if she checked the oil, and she said she did, and had to add about a gallon! Those engines are supposed to hold about 3 quarts from empty. So, after he drained about a gallon, it ran good again.
I guess it’s a lot better than the other way around, and running it empty! |

That's a good one Pat! A old friend of mine told me she figured that as long as the red light on the dash wasn't on, everything was OK. I explained that would be about the end of the engine when the light came on. I showed her, and her three teenage daughters how to check the oil, change a tire and a few other car care things. So far, none of them have ruined an engine and the girls are in their thirty's so I guess they listened! I have another friend that had a lawnmower repair business. He claimed that many times a customer would exclaim "it has oil in it?"

Bought a cute little sod cutter offn craigs list, 'bout 10 years ago. seller said he had changed the oil, in the 5HP honda, but that it still smoked. Got home, drained the extra qt of oil from the motor, and she runs fine. A $ 2500 sod cutter, for $400...
