What kind of oil or fluid goes into the B steering box and how full do you fill it? Mine steers a little hard looks like its low!

If it's 70 something years old like mine, filling it with oil will be futile. It will all leak out the seals. I have a grease zerk installed in mine in the place of the fill plug (Actually I have that on all my tractors). Just pump it full of corn head grease (Available from John Deere...it's green...go figure) and you won't have to mess with leaks. It's thicker than oil, and thinner than most greases, so it flows a little bit which is what makes it good for the steering gear boxes. Normal grease will create cavities/air pockets in the the box, and lubrication will cease after that.

I have a zerk in the C that I mow with. I use the same grease I use on my equipment. About ever three or four times mowing I pump a few more pumps of grease into and thru the steering box. This is to prevent the grease from working away from the gears.

Depends on what shape and age the tractor is. The fuel tank needs to come off and the tool box will at least need to be unbolted or unscrewed from the torque tube and taken off with the steering unit. The older B tool box has straight blade screw heads into the torque tube which were a pain to get out of my parts tractor. There's 2 different steering boxes on B's. The older boxes are Gemmer brand and have 3 teeth that ride on the worm gear. The newer steering boxes are Ross brand, and only have one tooth (sheared off on my tractor) that rides in the worm gear. Ill agree with these guys about not using grease. Ive torn down 4 of them and not only do they create pockets inside the box, there was actually water and rust inside 2 of the 3 that were set up for grease. One was actually binding where the shaft had rusted where it rides in the box from holding water. Good luck

I have not considered removing the old grease. Most will come out the top and up the tube unless the outer seal is real bad. Not sure how many years it would take to fill the tube unless you empty the gun each time you grease it. I pump the grease gun about three or four pumps every month or so.

Use the corn head grease and you won't have the air pocket problem.
I never took the gearboxes apart on any of my tractors when I installed zerks. They just had oil in them to start with (all of which had leaked out), and they didn't look bad inside when I peeked in through the fill hole with a flashlight. I just pumped a whole tube in my 8N gearbox and about 3/4 tube in my B.

The only reason I had them apart was to make the best unit out of the parts I had. 1 of the parts units had the steering shaft bent down to the seat. The worm gear is pressed onto the end of the steering shaft so its not easy to just swap the actual boxes. Some of these tractors have lived a pretty rough 60 to 80 years of service

Thanks for the input guys. I have never heard of anyone having problems with air pockets in their boxes. It's kind of a waste for me to buy a whole tube of that corn head grease and it sit on the shelf. I'll just clean it out and fill it up with the recommended 90W gear Oil.

So I took the plate of the Ross steering box to inspect things. I found it to be pretty clean not much gunk or dirt but it was empty of oil or lubricant. Guessing why that's why it steered hard. Filled up with 80w-90 Gear Oil. Thanks again everyone.

The oil does not appear to be leaking out but if it does then I guess I will go and buy a grease fitting and use corn head grease or something like it. Thanks again!

my gearbox leaked and had water in it. Got seal at local bearing shop and hasn't leaked a drop, yet. seal # was Timkin 474278

i "had" mine full or corn header grease but it all works it way up and out the box into my toolbox. Not to high jack the post but where the best place to buy seals and busing for a ross box for a b? CrestonM, if you take the time to reseal your 8n box you wont be disappointed. I did mine it wasn't all that hard and boy, it steers like it has power steering know.

I guess it depends how good a puller you have to get the pitman arm off. Mine popped right off, (mark it first) the seal only takes a few minutes,the real pain in the a&& is putting oil in that little fill hole.
