I have CA Allis with a 149 cu. in. motor that came out of a combine. Same as D14 or D-15. The only way it will start is to pull the throttle all the way down past idle and then it will fire. Once it starts it runs great. I've been fighting this starting problem for a while. The carb is a Marvel-Schebler TSX-670 which I've soaked in carb cleaner for a day then put a rebuilt kit in it. No luck. Then I thought I might have a magneto problem as it had somewhat of a weak spark. Installed a rebuilt mag, plugs, new wires with no luck. Did a compression check and all cylinders were at 140 pounds. Now I'm back thinking something has to be wrong with that carb. I check the carb adjustments and noticed that if I screw the idle adjustment all the way in the tractor idles rough but does not shut off. Any ideas on what's going on with this tractor. Thanks, Ron

Sounds like the choke might not be working. What combine did the motor come out of?

Not sure. Bought a model C tractor at an auction with this motor in it. The story at the auction was the motor came out of a combine as I could tell it was a 149 cu. in. I just wanted the motor out of the C to put in my CA. The choke works fine. I'm going to take the carb a part again as there has to be something inside there fighting me.

I am sort of confused. From what your saying your tractor starts fine but you throttle linkage goes below the first rung. Adjust it and I think you would have a great starting tractor. Anyone that owns a tractor and can put there throttle ling all the way down and a tractor would start and run approx. 600 rpm would be very happy. Unless I'm missing something it sounds like you did a very good job rebuilding your carb. just my 3 cents worth.

The tractor runs fine. It just won't start unless I pull the throttle down to idle as far as it goes.

When you pull it down PAST the lowest peg, get it started, then what do you do?
I assume that you are putting it back up into one of the notches? Is it idling then in the lowest notch? If so, then you need to adjust the rod that goes through the lever. If the above is true, then it is getting too much gas with the throttle handle moved forward. As stated, you need to adjust the throttle rod. Edited by Ted J - 11 Oct 2017 at 6:42am |
