To line or not to line a fuel tank?? |

I just recently finished cleaning a wd fuel tank using electrolysis and am wondering if I should line it with red kote or something similar or just leave it alone?? Tank wasn't rusted too bad. No leaks or pinholes. I've always been afraid to try the tank sealers as Ive seen a couple tanks that others had lined that turned into a mess with it peeling. I've always just tried to keep the vehicle/tractor under a roof and keep the fuel tank full. Knock on wood, Ive never had any rust issues storing my vehicles and tractors this way. I also learned to stay away from fuel with ethanol. So, should I line it or leave it be???

I'd leave it be. I don't have any personal experience, but if there is no rust or no pin holes, why bother? Darrel

I would use POR 15 and follow the instructions.
I have done 10 tanks and have never had issue. Gas last longer in my lined tanks. |

You guys make this decision too easy! 2 say to leave it, and 2 say to line it! Lol. All kidding aside, I appreciate your feedback and would love to hear more opinions.

Leave it original ! It's lasted 50 years already,right ?!!
The 'trick' to keep any tank fromt getting rusty is to keep it FULL of gas, well real gas, NOT one with ethonol in it. It's condensation water that rusts the tank so if you keep it full, no problems. As for 'liners', unless properly prepped and applied , they can cause more problems. I think of them like 'powder coat' paint, just worse. I've yet to see anything in powder coat tht survives and it's IMPOSSIBLE to touch up, refinish, repair to make look good again BUT at least it's on the outside! A liner flaking or peeling off is INSIDE, arrgh..... And, if a show tractor the 'correctness cops' will pop the cap and deduct points for not being original ! Jay |

my experience with the quick fix of sealers has all been negative. After a while they will melt and then that's an even nastier problem. If the tank is clean and kept full there is less air space to invite rust. If you have leaks have the repaired properly with solder and a patch. I agree with Jay.

I guess depends in the climate you live in.
We have different temperature swings in Mo. The tanks sweat and will rust again at my place. That why I line them, but also I do not cheat on what the instruction say on the liner kit. I would just keep eye on the tank see what it does since you are not going to line it. |

Even though the tank may be super clean inside, doesn't mean it might not have a weak spot somewhere, and eventually a leak starts. Usually, it'll start when your not around, and with a full tank of Gasoline leaking in a barn or even a pole barn, is NOT a good thing! Just the fumes alone could level the barn or garage. And God forbid, if you walk in with a cigarette in your mouth! You're gonna have an address change! Its a tough call, but rusty tanks I always have em' sealed up. Done correctly, theres no problem.

Clip a zinc anode on the outlet? Will protect the bottom of the tank.
