I recently purchased a 1955 WD45 with a wide front. There was excessive play in the steering wheel, and I traced it down to a failed front bearing on the worm shaft. As I was trying to figure out haw to get the bearing cup out of the housing, I noticed there was a steel plate behind it that appeared to be loose. I drove the cup out by hitting on the plate from the outside of the steering box. What is supposed to retain that plate? Is something else broke? I plan to silicone it in to place in the steering box. and then install the cup. The cup shoulders up well before it gets to the plate so the cup will not hold the plate in place. Any suggestions? My parts breakdown of the steering box does not show this plate.

That plug is just a press fit, like a core plug or a "freeze plug". I don't think I ever saw one loose Shocked
