Time to replace the battery in the 170 Diesel. What are your guys' recommendations. Cold Cranking Amps, Brand, etc. Most all our tractors and trucks have interstate batteries and we have had pretty good luck out of them.

Cold cranking amps aren't everything unless you plan on using it in zero degree weather. Check the cranking amps at 32F also. As for me, I'd go with maximum reserve capacity.

The biggest battery that will fit the box and that hasn't sat on the store shelf for more than three or four weeks is the best choice.

We sell Deka Batteries. Always had good luck with them. I hear the Interstate's are a good Battery also.

If you want a battery that will out perform all others it would be the Optima batteries. Down side is the price. I tend to buy them online as they are cheaper than buying them in a store. Every tractor I have has a optima battery. You just can't beat the power and longevity. When the lead battery needs to be replaced it gets a Optima. They just don't fail.

last several batteries I bought for the combines and a few tractors were bought from a dude that re-does them. can get big batteries (the powerful ones) for $30. each. so far they've lasted 2&3 years.

I'm with Shameless, tire shop sells redone ones , group 31 for 35 bucks and after 3 years all good , a group 31 will never fit in a 170 box tho ; even tho they need it !

I have been using NAPA commercial. A 170/175 really likes a gear reduction starter!

An AGM battery will outperform any other of the same size. It will also be the most vibration resistant. Be prepared to pay, though. The Optima noted in an above post is an example of a spiral wound AGM battery. Note that no battery carries a good warranty when used in a tractor as opposed to an automobile.

Once you use a AGM battery you will probably not go back to the old Standard battery.

I've had mixed results with optima batteries. Had them in the boat for the trolling motor. First set lasted 8 years of pretty heavy use, I was ecstatic about that. When I replaced them had heard some negative things but bought a new set, and starting battery anyway. What I found out is that they moved production to Mexico, (I think). Well the new set didn't make it 2 years. Starting battery 3 I think. Boat now has 3 Interstates in it. Are they the best? I don't know but were half or less money.
I think optima has since moved production back to the states. Quality is probably better, but their not getting anymore of my money! |

The most powerful battery for its size that I can find is the Odyssey AGM. It is a starting battery that will tolerate deep cycles. It is make by LTV. As far as I know there are three battery manufacturers in the U.S. LTV, Johnson and another I can't recall. Be prepared to shell out $200+. Amazon.com has the best price.

Optima used to be good, but after the last buyout, not so much. JMHO!

They're sold by Interstate Batteries now. I wonder who owns them? I noticed they now carry a 3 year warranty instead of the old 5 year warranty. There are several companies, including Interstate, that sell AGM batteries with a 48 month warranty. Consumer Reports rates the Die Hard and Interstate AGM batteries highly. The Optima is still the most vibration resistant of the bunch. |

The oldest optima I have is going on 10 years. Time will tell on others which are 3 years now. Have not had any of the troubles listed above in other posts. Hold charge very well and have lots of power.
