I've got what I think is a snap coupler model 40 disc, a heavy 8 footer with cast pivots for the angle adjustment.
One gang has had the 1 5/8" square nut welded to the shaft and the disc blades aren't tight on the axle shaft spacers. They all free spin and it doesn't seem to cut as well as the other 3.
Is there a spec on how to tighten this? Can the bearings be over-tightened by torquing this down?
I can't find a series 40 manual on agcopubs... would the series 20 and 100 manual be similar enough?

If it is like any other disc I've been around, you will never be able to overtighten it. In other words they need to be T-I-G-H-T !! and Dad always had to borrow the wrenches from the local A-C dealer when I was a kid to do it.

Thanks. I did a little more reading on here and found out those aren't tapered roller bearings like on a front wheel spindle.
A 1-5/8 railroad socket is expennnnnsive, But being able to use the big impact wrench on it will be priceless...

What causes the looseness is the spacers get worn, and then the nut bottoms out on the ends of the threads of the axle. Shoup sells an end washer that can take up some of the slack, but sometimes, even that ain't enough. You may have to fabricate some washers to insert between the worn spacers, and the disc blades...

Not being familiar with this disc, I have a question. Are the axle shafts round? He says that the disc blades spin freely. Admittedly the only disc I have had apart is my McCormick #37, and it has a square shaft with square holes in the blades, thus the blades won't turn independent of each other. I'm wondering if he has more issues than just a loose but?

These have round shafts. It's hard to overtighten these but it's possible. I've seen the threads stripped out before with a big 1" impact. I don't think you'll ever do that with a wrench.
