Could you please tell me what you know about the early U's? How hard is it to find parts for them and the continental engine? Hears some pictures from the auction site.

Go for it, nothing wrong that a checkbook can't cure!!!  Besides, half the fun is finding the parts and talking with the people who have them.

The Continental U's were from 1929-1932 but this one doesn't have united on it so it's probably not a 1929. It looked like a wheel extension beside it also, make sure any extra parts near it go with it. The continental engines can be expensive to overhaul, the parts are around but not that easy to find. The Continental UC I bought was overhauled and there were reciepts for around $3000 worth of work but this one may not be that bad. If it were in my neck of the woods I would definitely go to that auction if for no other reason than to keep it from going for scrap.

I don't like that $3000 but half that could be labor if it was hired right?

There are sources for parts out there, plus I have some in the shop if you'd buy this and needed some.  You just have to be patient and search around for good machinists that stand behind their work and parts suppliers willing to do the same. The sheet metal looks fairly good, so that's always a bonus.  The other things to look for are the radiator tanks and sides, I think they are specific to tractors with the S10 Continentals.  I rebuilt one of these a couple years ago and did it fairly cheap, but I started with a loose motor that had good babbit in all the bearings and good valves and springs, which you can't tell by looking at the outside of an engine.  If you do make the purchase and rebuild the engine, make sure you put #2 and #3 connecting rod in the correct way or it won't spin very good....lol.  Good luck, they're fun little tractors!

R.W, I'm not trying to be a total smart alec, if it's within your price range you'll kick yourself many times later for not getting it.  You are young enough that time is on your side, it don't have to be done by next week, you can take your time, spend what you can when you can and do it the way you want.

The only thing thats bothering me is the price, because I'm planing on paying for most of everything I do myself.

Sounds as you are trying to talk yourself out of it . If you never been in to a older one like this ,it will be a GOOD LEARNING  EX. for you .If you are worrying about the money now ,you better leave it sit . Just my 3 cents. Good Luck .

I would do it R.W, if you can afford it now get it. I know being young means a limited budget so do what I'm doing. Restore it one section at a time and buy parts as you can afford them. I've been working on a Model T like this for atleast 7 years and its almost done and like Fred said it's a great learning experience
red and green are nice for christmas, but orange is all year round

I couldn't agree more, the old ones like that are perfect when it comes to your first tractor restoration. They are made of such heavy built parts and are so simple in design that if something goes wrong it can easily be fixed. My WC taught me tons about how these old engines and gear driven parts worked and have prepared me to move up to more complicated projects.

I don't know how rare the model U is but I have never seen one in person or I don't think I've ever seen one for sale either. AC is rare around here so that could explain it.

I say go for it, let us know what happens.

They lsit it as a steel wheel AC.  There may not be anyone else there interested and you can get it cheap!  It's an auction, you never know what's going to happen.

I had to laugh when I read your post.My father would wait for the coldest rainy day when an auction was scheduled.Come on and get in the truck, good day for an auction, nobody will be there. We would pull up and pickup trucks would be lined up a mile in each direction.Every one my father talked to would say the same thing; Thought the rain would keep them away.

My advice is if it is something you want and you have the money,Buy it. A lot of this older stuff is disappearing fast.At an auction you have to pay more than someone else will.No control over who shows up.How bad do you want it?

In farm country rain and snow often mean a better auction turn out because the farmers can't do any work in the fields.

Myself I would not call this tractor a ODD BALL,There are more then you think .Just because it's something you know nothing about dose not make it a ODD BALL. The manifold and carbs are the 2 most hardest thing to find good and NOT CHEAP for the Cont . engine.

Good luck . Let us know how it goes. Sounds like you know all the things to check out, carb, manifold ,and if it all is good do expect to replace some seals and gaskets. It looks a lot better than some (or all ) that I started with. Again, I wish you success. Scott

I'v been thinking about this alot and have decided not to go for it. The reason is I really can't do anything with it besides taking it to shows. The steel wheels cant go on hard surfaces and no hydrolics also. I would just like to get something that I can use insted of just show.

You know if you keep using common sense like that you'll never have more tractors than you need. LOL

R.W. :You can always remove the lugs and front guide rings and run on the bare steel wheels or wrap some rubber around the rims for a quieter ride.  If I was closer, I'd be right after that 'U'.!!
