 Topic: Swather or Disc mower

My swather is shot and looking at getting a different pull type swing tongue. I started looking at the 3 point disc mowers also. I've never been around one. Any recommendations on either. Is there any brands to stay away from. I have around 10 acres of alfalfa and also mow some brome waterways. We rake the wind rows together, so would be raking either way. I currently use a sickle mower for the brome. Thanks

Disc mowers are great for mowing, you'll never use a sickle mower agian. Kuhn makes JD and new hollands. I like our 275 JD, but it takes a good size tractor set out wide to ballance the load hanging out there. At least on our hills. Andy

Discbines certainly are nice. If you miss a sliver or are cutting a wedge you can re-run a row without clogging guards. Also in downed hay they seem to lift it and cut it when otherwise it would just lay under the guard. The only downside I have found so far is they demand horsepower. Normaly I cut with a 9' AC haybine and the 185 doesn't even know it is back there. When I borrow a 10' New Holland discbine it knows. Flat land I can cut in 6th no problem, but on our big hill I have to go down to 3rd to hold rpm's.

I bought a new Hesston 1345 12' hydro swing disk cutter several years ago, best investment in haying equipment I've ever made.
My cousin in Ohio has had two New Idea 9' diskbines. He mostly runs JD but likes the New Idea better then the green ones, say's they are quieter. He bought the first diskbine maybe 15 years ago. Had a field of grass hay 6' tall that had fallen down. His NH haybine would cut for 20 feet and plug up. He called the dealer to bring out the diskbine and after making two rounds at 5 MPH, told the salesman he'd take it.

Try a Drum mower, it has less moving parts than a disc, and costs way less. Google Carter equipment, Tennessee. My 5-1/2' drum mower was about $3K, 4yrs ago.

I have a nh617 9 ft disc mower that I operate with 185. Mows about 200 acres of hay and pasture a year. I love it. Tractor handles it well mowing. Transporting you need to use your noggin. It is heavy. Do not raise or lower with the mower pointing it down hill. I mow in second hi. Would go faster, but ground hog holes or blow holes are hard on my systm. Not worth it. Bill
